View Full Version : Which plugin is best for hair?
GodfatherUr 03-19-2003, 11:11 AM Hey all, got a quick question.
I am looking into purchasing some good plugs for hair/fur here at work and am not sure as to which one is the best to go with. The only package that I have used thus far is shag hair and was wondering if anyone knew of a better package or one comparable to that?
Thank you all in advance:)

it's not from splutterfish and it's 'Shave and a Haircut'.... splutterfish is just testing it for Joe Alter. The max version was programed by the 'Absolute Character Tools' people.
And BTW Shave and a Haircut is much better then Shag. That's comming from me who owns Shag:Hair.

If there will be "'Shave and a Haircut" for Max than go for that, because (like pluMmet said) it's better than Shag-Hair.
But hey, Shag isn't really bad.

Thanks all for the input. Does anyone happen to have a link to the shave and a haircut website so that I may look into it?
thanks again

Actually, SplutterFish contracted out the initial work to the Snoswell Design folks, and now SplutterFish is doing a lot of work on Shave in-house. So I wouldn't say SplutterFish isn't working on it at all.

The link to the Shave stuff should be on Joe Alter's site...

It seems like the fact that Shag hair doesn't cast shadows would be a big problem....

yup, it also doesnt effect global ilumination. Which is not very helpful. Looking forward to shave and haircut comming out. Shag hair is very awkward to use.:annoyed:

Both shag and shave can make a mesh at render time to allow use with GI but you've gotta make sure you can handle the extra load on render times - Ruairi robinson used shag to output a mesh for 50% grey...
It'll be worth waiting the extra couple of months for shave to arrive to make a proper comparison - it's shaping up very nicely so far.
And shag hair does cast shadows - theres a special shadow type to do this.

thats an awful big mesh tho! and you lose the dynamics, not that it works very well anyway.
Seems maya and soft get it all intergrated, max needs to keep up.

hey!! for now shag hair is the only plugin for creating volumetric hair in max..well its good for short hair like fur...gets difficult for long hair...besides it does'nt have thickness and length weight map support..and a poor dynamics engine...which doesn't work with wind and gravity..but good for simple collision..
SO just wait for SHAVE & a Haircut (its been on news for so long)
its available for Maya...hope the max version will be good too!!!
