it would be a real pain to do it with standard max, prolly wouldnt even look that clean, but afterburn will do that and then some.

I have not tried this kind of clouds with Afterburn yet, but I think Afterburn can do this.

is there even a way to do this through just standard max? I'd like to try even if its a pain in the butt to do.

if you really want to do this in max the easiest way i can think of that would look decent is particle clouds / facing/ gradient opacity.... and just play w/ the density and such -
but i can't see it coming out looking as good as that example

Without Afterburn a result this magnificent is almost impossible, but you can come quite far by using a particle system with large facings with an opacity map on each facing. An awful lot of tweaking will be needed to make it look good, however.
