View Full Version : Wings, a slow modeler?
Stejahen 03-19-2003, 04:38 AM I've used wings a little, It seems powerful and easy, but it also seems slow, like 5 clicks just to move a vertex! etc,
Are there any keyboard shortcuts?

Yes, in fact almost every command can be custom shortcutted. Just put your mouse curser over the command and hit insert, then the key you want hotkeyed.
In the newest release, there is a hotkey list on the help menu. I think that all users of Wings will agree that it is the fastest modeler in existance.

wings is bloody fast...but it's not as fast as modeling in LightWave...yet. I need more Wings Time.

I think loganarts might disagree with you there. :p

Policapo: its a differant approach to modelling then LW...namely edgeloops vs. verts.

Stejahen: try Tools|Tweak.

yeah...i totally get the modeling workflow...and that's why i said it was bloody fast...when wings supports Real Time Sub-D objects then we're talking perfect workflow...(and i know about the Smooth Shade preview at the moment). :)
Don't get me wrong. Wings is KING in my book...but so is LW. :)

I'm with you Policarpo
And if you guys like Tweak, you will love Tweak_s!!!
It along with an updated slide have both been updated and now work with Wings.
NOTE::
Pay CLOSE attention to the instructions at the bottom of the screen when using them!!!!!!
Get them both here....

after about a yr or so I guess I now prefer seeing the cage versus the smooth version
thats not to say I dont use it to double check but for the most part its all cage
try working in shaded mode with wireframe mode
it helps give you a better idea of how the surfaces are moving and stuff
by the end a detailed model is going to have more pull than a simple model
so I can accually see smooth preview modeling hendering your progress later on

Ditto Policarpo and Fuzatron.
I love Wings to death and it's a wonderful app, but in my book Lightwave still has that edge with real time subdivision.
Oddly enough I model just about the same way in Wings or Lightwave. But for that subtle detail, nothing beats Lightwave. The use of realtime Sub-d's lets you tweak those subtle organic surfaces faster.
Its slower in Wings because of constant switching to smoothed preview. The other alternative would be to add enough polygons to see everything without resorting to smoothed preview every tweak or so, which is counter productive especially when you're animating. More polys to push around and tweak to get those morphs in. (Although it works great in Lightwave using the quads only philosophy and a lower subdivision setting...)
The multi windows system in Wings can work in a similar fashion as a workaround to get similar results to realtime sub-dees. Having one window with a smooth preview, and the another to regular view. But with detailed models one tweak and you have to wait for a second for the smoothed model window to update. *sigh*
Let me just say that Lightwave's symmetry function sucks, after working on a complex model and finding that somehow symmetry has vanished, I spend a lot of time fixing it, I finally ended up with writing a plugin similar to Cman's. (If I'd known he was working on it... I wouldn't have bothered. Now I just use a little trick using volume selection to fix symmetry... But problems with merging back that geometry is still problematic... Enter Wings.)
That said, I say that using both creates the ULTIMATE organic modeleling machine :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

just remember
wings isnt even 1.0 yet
when I started using wings it was version 0.83 and the very first public release was a month earlier with version 0.80
it had its problems like any new app
but the speed and ease was there and it was a great modeler even back then
it brings fun back to modeling
not many apps can say they are fun :)
also remember that the smooth surface editing forces you to keep it all quads
wings doesnt have this limitation
I think LW is a good tool all around, so dont get me wrong there
cheers

I agree Wasamonkey about Wings being as fun as modeling in Lightwave :D
also remember that the smooth surface editing forces you to keep it all quads
It's funny though, even in Wings I stick to the all Quad philosophy. Some people view this as a limitation in Lightwave and it is... In a good way. Wings makes it so easy to have an N-sided face, that same face subdivided can cause streching problems with textures. People who model in Softimage usually stick to an all quad philosophy as well (Well sprinkled liberally with tris.)
You also get complete control over the surface shape when it's subdivided. Since I try to model for animation, the less polys, more predictable deformations you get the better the model. You need more polys in Wings to predict the final sub-dee shape better. I usually pop it back in Lightwave for the final touches using sub-patch. But I do put in enough polys for control. I usually stay within twenty thousand polys.
It's tempting to model with a ton of poles/stars in Lightwave to build up a model also, and for the same reason as modeling in n-gons, it's easier! But I tend to avoid that for the same reason and stick to a clean mesh. :)
Other people will have other opinions but the day Bjorn decides to stick in real time sub-dees in Wings... That'll be awesome, and probably the day I stop using Lightwave to do organics. (Go Bjorn go!!!)
