He has some free tutorials on polycount.com. Read those and see if they help you.

I have his book, but have only read the first few chapters. Most of it is useful info for people who are just starting out in low-poly modeling. I'm waiting to read the rest before I recommend it to anyone else.

The Paul Steed book isn't necessarily bad, but the method of poly modeling he uses by boolean connecting spheres is an out of date method of poly modeling and it takes forever to produce a clean model with that method. Hence the reason the book spends like two hundred pages of him just turning edges and merging vertices.

If you've been saving for two months to get the book then I would suggest holding onto your money (or better yet buying ram or something for your computer).

Instead, you're better off checking out poly modeling tutorials on the internet. Here are links to some good ones besides Polycount (which is a great source of info in and of itself).

i found to book a great start to low poly 3d character modelling.
internet sites are ok, but the cd has all the files and textures, but its one big tutorial on one character.
i would say its worth it, but you must remember that no book will give magic answers to everything, if they did then anyone could do 3d. its a good starting point, and has usefull info about general modelling texhniques and poly limits and drawing.
you pays your money and you take your chances.

When I first got this book I had a PIII 600 desktop and PIII 733 Laptop, both with 512 MB RAM. I loaded the tif reference file for the background image of the character and boy did both computers churn & crunch big time loading it and then using it!

Anyone else experience that?

I had since stopped going through the book at that point which was well over 18 months ago, almost 2 years. After reading this thread it dawned on me to pick it up again and try it on my i8200 1.6 GHz laptop and see how it goes.

i didnt have much of a problem, mine was a PIII 550. Just made the textures smaller and had them lower res in the view port.
