Title: Egypt's Lamp of Myth
Name: Jason Mohan
Country: USA
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

I had a lot of fun learning (still learning) about mentalray & this resulting scene was a small personal project done to test those skills. This lamp is modeled from a actual Egyptian antique as reference. Displacement/bump maps along with subdivison approximation nodes were used for the detail on the lamp & the desert. The sky was photographed by myself early in the morning. Dry desert grass is Paint Effects. Depth of Field was applied in Maya. The scorpion & traveler are photos composited in Photoshop. The sand ripples around the base of the lamp & scorpion's legs were added in Photoshop as well.

Feedback is always welcome.

tuuhia,

Appreciate the critique. :)
Assessing your work in your gall, I see your mental skills are very sharp.
Your approval tells me my renderings are fairly accurate.

Everything about this piece is wonderful. Especially the sand work...Very nice touch having the camel and the figure in the background, and the sky looks very fitting. Good work on the modelling and displacement of the lamp. Excellent work all round.

I'm slightly puzzled as to where exactly the bright light source is though. What is on the other side of the lamp?

Thanks for the critique Chris...

I wanted a intensified caustic from the light of the sun setting.
This enhanced the aesthetics of the images & the magic of the lamp.
Captures the traverlers attention also. :D
