Im working on a game that use 3ds files as main object format.
And somehow, when I export to .3ds, the poly count goes up alot.
From 500 polys in cinema to over 900 polys in max format.
I've tried the same with a .obj format and the same happens, whats wrong with Cinema's exporting.
Im using Cinema 4D XL 7.0

... my guess is that your quads are getting triangulated on export (definitely the case with .3DS) or import (with .OBJ). :shrug:

try triangulating your model in Cinema before exporting in order to get an actual poly-count (including tris)
