SheepFactory 03-18-2003, 09:10 PM I came across this great thread at the official board:

Been playing with Auto Uv for an hour now and i must say i am pleasantly surprised it works like a charm when it works. Most often it crashes on my model so i am wondering if I am doing something wrong.
Do you guys have any renders of models you UV'd in wings?

Sheep:
I've been fooling around with auto uv lately. I don't have a render but here's a snapshot:

Where do I get autoUV?

If you have Wings you already have it.
With the object you want to map selected,
Object mode context menu --> UV mapping.

Well, I don't get it. Without bitmaps, how far can this truly go?

I don't get your meaning...
What you do is lay out your UVmap the way you want it.
Then, right click in the AutoUV window and choose "export".
This will create a tga file.
Open this file in some paint program, like the Gimp. (http://www.gimp.org)
After you're done painting the map,
save as either bmp,tga,or tif.
Then go back to wings, rightclick in the AutoUV window again,
and click export,and then file,
and browse to the folder where you saved the file.
This will load the file and apply a material called objectname_auv1,
and the texture should show up in the geometry window.
Hope this helps some...

I did what u said and all I got was black lines on the model. On the little UV Mapper it only showed a few areas textured and then on the model, the lines got even darker and there was no texture whatsoever. I'm confused... btw I used Photoshop 7.

Okay, when I imported the texture the unwrap thingy is always over it and that turns into the texture and I can't figure out how to make the actual texture the texture when I hit the apply texture button... okay, you might have to read over that a few times to absorb it...

If you don't want the edges to show, this is what I do...
after exporting the tga,I open it in the Gimp (same thing in PS).
Then make a new layer and set opacity so you can see through it to the lines underneath.
When you're done painting, just remove the background layer,
and save the painted one.
When you're back in wings, and have imported the painted texture,
rightclick in the AutoV again and enter the "draw options" menu.
There's some options for how edges should be drawn...
Just choose to NOT draw edges, and then apply the texture.
Should work :)

Right now whatever is shown in the AutoUV window will become the texture when you Apply Texture or whatever. So you have to do the funny Draw Options thing.....
For painting the textures, I find it better to set the UVMap layer's mode to Multiply instead of Normal. Then I make the texture layer beneath it. This way I can see the map and the texture :)

That Severed Head thingy of mine was UV'd with AutoUV :)
