Is it?
then whats the trick, if it is that old--

Since this is cloth, it can hardly be older than R9 ;-)

I dont think a pageturning of that quality is a no-brainer--
especially the control of the page-turning combined with the cloth-sim looks tricky--

for faster result, use Spline Dynamics (Put it under a Extrude NURBS), that's faster than Cloth or Softbody

2Files; Spline Dynamics and Cloth => Download (http://www.bleedingpixel.net/downloads/book.zip)

Since your post I've attempted a simplified version with Clothilde. Having run into self collision problems (unwanted intersecting polys) with clothilde on major projects before, I'm not surprised to see this happening in my test (posted below: v10). Collisions (no matter the subsampling rate) constantly defeat me when using c4d rigid body dynamics too. Anyone who can unveil the mysteries of collision detection (in practice hopefully, not theory) would be most welcome.

Notes on the file: Each page begins 2m apart. Point/edge/poly eps = 0.9. Self collision on. Subsample at 50 (half of maximum value). . . later turned on Self repulsion with .5m dist.
