hello ,
i am just picking up xsi 3.0 today , i am faiirly advanced in maya 4.5 and the school which i am to beign study at mainly uses xsi , so i wanna get a bit comfortable in it since i have a few months before i begin , basically i was wondering if anyone here knows a good way to layout the zoom/dolly/orbit/pan etc to work like they do in maya , where you hold ctrl and use the 3 mouse buttons to control the viewport , in xsi its kind of arbitrary to be reaching for keys it slows down workflow , anyone have some good tips on this please tell
-thx

Use the "S" key. This is the multiporpose navigation tool. Look at the status line to now what mouse button for what navigation and also you can hold shift(when you are in multiporpose navigation mode) for constrained navigation. I think that this is what you are looking for.

Yes the S key can perform just like the alt key.

but keep in mind that you can not remap the S key to the alt key.

Also as a tip.

Transform menu>Tool Options>Camera tab

Check the box labeled "Use Alternate Mouse Mapping"

This will make your mouse buttons work like Maya 4.5 when using the S key.

Though, if you really want to learn XSI, then I would just use the default setup to get use to it. But the alternate mapping is nice for people who just need to have it like Maya.

If you open the keyboard mapping, you can see wich function holds each shortcut. You can convert this listing into a webpage and see it all in that page. Pretty useful.

Hope this helps
