A new virtual model of the imperial capital circa 320 AD the Emperor Constantine when it had grown to a million inhabitants.

"Rome Reborn" was unveiled on Monday in a first release showing the city at its peak. Developed by the University of Virginia's Bernard Frischer, Rome Reborn (www.romereborn.virginia.edu) will eventually show its evolution from Bronze Age hut settlements to the Sack of Rome in the 5th century AD and the devastating Gothic Wars.

Pre-Rennaisance History and CG. Two of my favorite things.

Sweet, Thanks Roberto!

Great find!

I was particularly struck with the video of the Coloseum. For the first time, I could just imagine standing there, looking around at the massive crowd and understanding that I was about to face death simply for their enjoyment! That's pretty sobering. Yikes!!!

Yeah I only wished they had spend more effort on a better graphics engine and texturing. It's a bit of a let down in this department.

Indeed, imagine what a more state-of-the-art engine could do.

Great find though, really interesting, love the cheesy music ;)

Yeah, the textures, lighting and some oddball mesh issues were fairly obvious in the video.

I too am dissapointed by this. If you're going to recreat Rome at least do it properly. Since all buildings are static I don't see why they don't texture bake GI into it. Even if everything was left grey, that would make it look a lot better than it does at the moment.
