View Full Version : sci-fi/fantasy jet plane
Here?s somethign i started on yesturday..this is one of the jet engines for the craft..i?m going for something realisticly looking this time...so it?s hopfully gonna look like it COULD fly....inspiraion for the design are the 2 lezy robots in the bj?video..."made in softimage"...
I?m using LightWave 7.5b on a P4 2.4ghz 512 DDR RAM and a Titanium gfx card...

good stuff.. will keep an eye out for this one.
one tiny thing maybe: your whole design is rather round and cury right now, but then you have this "connector ring" or whatever you wanna call it in the shape of an octagon.
but otherwise i´ll shut up and just watch it progress.
Well stimpy....hehe..i´m going to have something over that so i didn´t feel the need to have any high detailed thing under...but good eyes ;) :applause:

Very cool! You have a great attention to detail. I'm a detail freak as well and love to have images where even the tiniest of details have been created. It really helps to create a realistic feel for it. Looking forward to seeing more including a textured version of the engine.

Great modeling, your skills and creativity leave me quite jealous. How about some info. to go with these shots. What are you using? I like your lighting setup, GI? Polygon? Sub-d?
well actually...the first thing i say is what i use n so on....
I´m using sub-d and regular poly modeling for this...poly modeling for most of the details...and sub-d for the rest..

Hit SHEAR and move the outside of the thing forward or backward, then (or before that) increase the overall depth (front to back) of the wing where it attaches to the engine. The wing looks to frail right now to provide any lift to the ship.
Hope that inspires. :)

I'm receiving a psychic message...
wait for it...
I see a future front-page thread... yes... it's a futuristic plane... trust me... I'm right.

03-27-2003, 10:04 PM
Ok, well I second that they look a bit spinply to support those engines. You might want to try making them widerd front to back like previously suggested. They also have no control surfaces, which is odd for a wing.
However, they have that kind of cool, but completely devoid of any concern for physics anime craft kind of look to them.
So combining the lack of control surfaces with your not yet attached wing segments, and the futuristic thing. I was thinking you might leave the outter wing segmented in two parts with some articulated bits in between. So that the the wing could change overall geometry as it flies.
Of course in the real world where they are trying similar ideas, the wing would still be one smooth surface. But hey it gets back to the base physics agnostic high-tech sorta anime feel to it. Without animation however, it might not come across.
hope it gets the ideas flowing.
 That's looking delicious. The detail is quite amazing.
Well raz-O...i agree..but...u see the segment ..the thin outer most part...that was actually ment to be movable, up/down....
I just never got around to making the mechanical part that moves it..since i never was happy with the overall design of it..
But i started on another design for the hole outer wing, this might be it..but we´ll see..i´ll post what i have so far soon...
This version is shorter...stubbyer..and more airodynamic..but it also has some fat ass thingy on the end of it that has 2 smaller wings(pointing up/down), on it and it´s formed out of the hull on the enginside...so it kinda flows over...might look coo...u´ll see what i mean soon enough...

03-28-2003, 11:12 AM
Very good work.
I lke shape of wings but they are quite small for such big engines. It may give lesss plane more rocket impression.
Like i said before rikimountain -"it?s all in my head"...
here?s yet another version of the wings...This one?s better then the others..(still not finished, no details), and i was thinking of maybe adding 2 short thinner wings on the end of them..on that fat thing at the end...should I ?

Ok, first, this is just beautiful. I made a ship model not long ago with engines similar to yours, but mine looks like toilet paper compared to yours. So between being amazed, I secretly hate you. :P (just kidding)
As for the wings. Since you're still not 100% happy with them, or at least you don't seem to be, here's what I would suggest. Right now you have that tiny tip of the wing facing down and in, but I think it needs to face up and out, but at the exact opposite angle. Example:
Yours now:
-------
\
My idea:
\
-------
That's a really bad idea of what I mean, but here's another way of looking at it. If you were to take the wing tip and flip it exactly 180 degrees so that it's now facing up and out, that is the angle I see it at (in my head). That, to me, would just kind of make it look like a glider, or at least that the wings really can carry the plane.
That's just me. Just passing along my delusions. :)
hehe...well i actualy thought about that exact thing...or rather..i was thinking of adding another pair of wings like (your idea)...
maybe shorter...maybe longer....but the wing tips that now faces down was meant to be used for stabilization and stearing...since this would be a kind of a intra planitary vessel..maybe police or something else...it wouldn´t need to big of a wings and wing movements to stear it and i was thinking that it would operate at a verry high altitude so the twin jet engins are used for 2 things....
1: low altitude....maximum thrustors...+ gathering energy and storing that energy to be used for..
2: high altitude flight..getting places..FAST..that´s why i have the big ass exhaust part...maximum thrust from the stored up energy
I was also thinking of adding the Harrier capabillity..hovering..that way it won´t need a runway, just a launchpad...
well..that´s my vision...

with youre level of modelling that would be some cool as dynamics so far thats brilliant, looks like it bel=ongs connected to a bomber type ship though (twin engines)

Tilting it ?...what exactly do u mean ?

03-29-2003, 11:33 AM
I think you're ALL right! Leave that downward-pointy thing on, and give it some longer, more wingtip-like things that stick out beyond it and UP a little.
And man, is that thing ever looking cool-- are you really just deciding what it looks like piece by piece, or do you have a sense of what the main body is going to be already?
hehe...yeah..actualy...i am...but i have a lil idea on what SOME parts of the main body will look like...got a lil inspired by the mini ships in that big ass hanger in the "StarTrek Nemesis" movie..or rather a lil part of that ship that looked coo...
i´m planing a short video tut on how to make both detail and hull....
Interested ?
or should i jus make a regular one with pix and text ?

tilting wings...
like the whole wing swivels up including the engines so that the intakes point upwards, maybe the image will help. (blue line thrust, orange line direction (the second blue line on the 2nd pic is something i realised it might need for balance)
Oh, and i love the vid tut idea :applause: :applause: :applause:
ahaaa i see...hehe..tilting the hole thing is a no no...hehe..i was thinking of the Harrier idea itself..just some vector trhustors underneath....but thnx for the suggestion the idea about the balance is good..i´m going with that one.....
and about the vid tut...i said short...10 min is a damn long vid...hehe..prolly do a 5 min or something...just the basics..(if i don´t do the tuts in parts..then i might do a longer one)...and bandwith is no problem..
I will do the vid and send it to ma' buds at http://www.3d-palace.com they´ll host it for me....

swirly-chicken: I really like how your WIP is developing, and just out of your mind! :bounce:
But what I should point for now is that the little wings at the ends of the main wings (I don't remember if they have a technical name -- ailerons??) looks a little weak. I'm just trying to imagine this plane flying at full throttle... they eventually could blow away! ... or, what happens when the plane is landing? What if that little wings are upside oriented and more thick?
I like very much the cockpit/scape pod, and agree that will fit perfectly in a more massive main body
haha..insult...u´r a funny guy stimpy :scream: :p
...
Ok let me say this once again....this is a sci-fi/fantasy airplane....ANYTHING goes.
...:arteest: :arteest:
:D so it won´t tair away at full throttle..and even if it was surposed to be real...it could have been made by some strong composit material...so it would hold..
When it lands...they'll fold up ;)
well i believe it´s dinner time...l8rz..

Yeah, that 7.5b update has been crap so far, many of my useful plugs just don't work no more. :thumbsdow
would be interesting to see how you animate those wires under the hood. Wat a kick-ass model you've got. :applause:

Hey hey,
Yeah, even though you haven't asked, I like the second design a lot also. But I guess you really got to think about what this craft is going to be used for. Cargo? Fighter? Bomber? Passenger? Privately owned personal entertainment subspace craft? Taxi? Charter bus? "tug boat"?
Just some ideas to think about. If you really have something in mind as to what you think it should be then you'll beable to see what you want to go with. For instance, with a cargo ship, the hull is going to really ballooned, if it's a bomber the hull is going to be sturdy but streamline, if it's a fighter, even more stream line with a small hull. The nose is just as important. Usually a large blunt nose is associated with a cargo/passenger/freighter/heavy bomber and a smaller more pointed nose is usally associated with a faster moving, more agile craft. You may even want to think about adding a 5th, larger engine built into the hull of the craft. Or you may want to think about how someone would board the craft, that could also help you decide one how you want to create the hull. You may also want to consider how it'll be powered, how it will maneuver, how it will refuel, how it will dock with other ships/if it will dock with others... and so on and so forth. Just a whole bunch of ideas to get you thinking.
Or you don't have to listen to me at all. Great work! :applause:

I like the first one more, because it has a sleeker look, faster, slightly more dangerous. The problem with it is that the front of the body would be almost ridiculously large compared to the cockpit :) But I still think it looks cooler
The second works better together with the rest of the craft, but it hasn't the same deadly appeal that the first version has...
Gah I don't know. I'm sure you'll do whatever will look best ;)

is this neccesarily going to be aerodynamic? If its supposed to be able to fly i suppose engines half as big as the rest of the body could fix that though
Dont let this thread die! i need to see that ship finished!
haha...i´m back rom the weekend and can get crackin on it again..had some time to reflect on what to do...

So where are the updates?! :)
Do you know what the 'role' this aircraft will have? If you do, I'm sure that'll show you what type of design you'll need. I remember seeing you talk about high altitude flight and low altitude flight and highspeed flight.
Swirly, I would love to see your modeling techniques for those engines and such.
the "role" of it...well i was thinking about that...i guess it would be like a..umm...i dunno...maybe something in the lines of a "Tomcat"...that means a defender....but it´s isn´t a millitary vessel...hmm..maybe police.....or maybe even an ambulace...and it uses the railgun to cut stuff open..like "the jawas of life" that the firemen use to cut open cars..anyways...i´m going to work REAL early tomorrow...getting a ride to the subwaystation tomorrow so i´m leaving at 7:15am...so i hope i´ll do some modeling on it then....
but we´re pretty swamped at work now..only 3 weeks left till the deadline...still got tons to light/texture and render..
ok..back to some movie with carmen electra... :P

If you smooth out the fuselage behind the cockpit, but make the width where it attaches to the main body thinner than the width immediately behind the pilate, it will give it a nifty "cobra-hood" like shape from the top view...

How about a rear hatch? Trunk maybe? Perhaps behind the cockpit of the plane? Maybe for other passengers? Or if you want to go military, a gun turret? How about an airbrake? Central tail? Just something that'll eliminate the bareness of the large section of just up and down panels behind the 'cab'.. don't get me wrong though, I think it looks awesome
i smoothened out the bulgy parts....the panels tha surround the cocpit are gonna explode off when the escape pod is launched....so i can´t do much right there...
tailwing is in the works...probably going dubble...
airbreaks is coo..but turret ?..naw..dun' think so...i jus' think turrats are lame....or rather i think they look lame...

I think the tailplane design works but maybe it needs some tweaking : pointing downwards or something. maybe make the front shorter or the back longer?
hehe...chi...if u like the tailwing so much u can have it..drop by the #cgtalk channel on irc and i´ll send it to ya...
i´m gonna delete the sucker if no one wants it...(selling of parts of the ship it seams like..j/k hahah)
anyways...i´m not entiraly sure what i´m gonna do with the back part...
centrilizing the body in ref to the wings won´t be something i´ll do...cuz..the hole point is NOT to have so much at the back...i want a design that´s more...umm...me i guess...

that is the most impressive model i've seen and to top that; it's all from your head....damn. i've tried that a few times but i either 1) work too hard on one section of it and completely forget about the rest of the design or 2) my brain ends up stuck in a loop.
as far as how your model looks....hmmm...it seems to me that you have somehow managed to take anime and rip it from 2d and put it in an entirely different level of existence.
after seeing your work...i was almost inspired to quit....but....nah!

Just something I thought would look nice... I bet if you could set those fins up to lay flat under hard acceleration or highspeeds and then tilt back up under slower manuevering, you would be set :)...
interesting idea...
the wings at the bottom..actually already are rotatable..like in your scetch...was the hole idea with thouse wings...
regarding the top ones...could look coo..but not in that specific place and not that shape...there too big..and they shadows the parts under it...maybe a pair of thiner ones...further back...thnx for the inspiration...

why dont u make the main shiop and then experiment with fins, they dont have to look very connected to the hull since most fins are designed to swivel (thats were the detail goes :).
also, if you hull was longer then i think a canard design would be wicked! there arent enough of those around, they look too cool to be ignored. well, thats my rant, ill leave you too it

First, the requisite: Beautiful friggin' job! What a THRILL to follow this thread -- You realize you're bringing people a delight to their day?! SO great! ok, enuf of that.
Are you still planning on changing the area just behind the cockpit? I remember something about you feeling it wasn't fleshed out satisfactorily, and I sortuv agree.
Also, I think you should begin several more threads with other Cool models, because we're not salivating enough.
(By the way, I feel the amount of detail you've shown through this thread has been GENEROUS... dunno what that was about.)

hehe i think my gamma is adjusted right ;)
all i wanted was get an idea of the whole, which i now have, so thanks a lot :D
my problem was that you were sometimes showing parts of the plane and i didn't really see what/where they were

Umm... Swirly, I'm not sure if I like the balance of the ship as it currently is. The engines and the cockpit jutting out from essentially a straight across wing base makes it look a little front heavy.

I think that maybe some form of canard or small jets at the front would help balance the way you cut off the back, maybe sweeping the wings back might look more streamlined too. otherwise this is a very cool model! (what happened to the vtol thing?)

Yeah, Swirly, the masses have spoken, well, ok, two people have spoken, and I know you said you're done with it, but maybe you're just confused and what you really want to do is go back and have another look at the balance of it. I'm not so sure it's believable that it wouldn't just fall on its nose in a normal gravity situation as it stands right now. At least add some sort of hefty landing gear in the front?

Hey hey now fellas hold on a moment there :shame: We all know that this is a sci fi jet and that it can do things that perhaps things of today couldn't do. ;) I think it was mentioned earlier or something like that about the small fins on the tips of the wings.
I would have to say though Swirley... I looked at the model in that last shot you took... and the cockpit does seem to extend unnaturally forward without some kind of visible reason.. let me explain myself:
The area right behind the cockpit looks similar to a offroad bmx style ramp, in a good way of course :) I was thinking that with your 'harrier' style engine setup, you could develop an intake, of some kind that would duct air in from on top of the center area. Kinda like having a turbo prop engine positioned 75 degrees in respect to the horizon and aimed with the intake up to the 'intake duct' I was mentioning earlier. You could even set it up with a nice computer controlled valve that opens and shuts the intake when changing to hover mode :) *that would add some brownie points to your already knee slappin' good work*
Or, my other thought was to pull the cab back alittle. But those are all just thoughts too. As you know, we can't control how you design it, so in case you take offense to this, don't, we still love you!  :applause: :p
jus spoke to ma server guy and the server will be down AGAIN, for 1 or 2 days..major upgrade going on...

hello stargate
no serious, that last upload reminds me of stargate.
Hmmmm.....thinking of getting rid of the escape pod idea....and use that idea for another project, one that´s more worked throu..
this way i can fix the problem with the cocpit and the area around it...

Swirly you f00, just upload them to 'palace, I can give you an FTP if you want. Its faster and by the sounds of it more reliable. lol
Cris

i can now add something right behind the cocpit..maybe an airintake or something....cuz now it feels kinda empty..
