View Full Version : Sub-polugon dispacement. A little push please.
snips 06-10-2007, 09:15 PM I am following this MAYA tutorial for making a sword.
http://tutorialscentral.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=54&Itemid=1&limit=1&limitstart=2
I am trying to get the engraved text on the upper side fo the sword. Except from using Boole i was told i can use Sub-polugon dispacement. Can it be by using a texture? A little step by step guide would be fantastic.
Thx.

You can use a texture for this, but to get a clean edge like in the Maya tutorial you would need hell lot of subdivisions and a high resolution image.
I would do it like in the tutorial, not with displacement.

I totally agree. Problem is i cant figure out by what method its done on MAYA s the only way i know is boole, but causes lots of unwanted polys, even with cuts.
I did projected the next on the surface but i dont know how to engrave it.
Thats why i wanted to learn about subD.
hi there,
It is a nurbs modelling tutorial, therefore they are using nurbs to moddel the sword. It is a lot easier to moddel those kinda things with nurbs..., so you could use moi 3d to model it and export your model as an obj to cinema.

ciao jan
Bool set to High Quality should be able to do the trick here.

Hi. I know thats it is nurbs modeling. I am just saying that the guy in the tutorial didnt use any boolean function. He just made the engravement using nurbs. In c4d i dont know how to do this with splines. After projecting the text on the surface, i go nowhere!
CINEMA 4D is not a NURBS modeller. You should use Bool. The carving can be done using extrude NURBS for example.

Why not use a normal map? You don't see any changes to the outline?
If you're on an old fashioned pc, or a macpro with win installed, you may want to take a look at this freeware app:
http://www.xnormal.net/
I just downloaded it, and haven't tried it myself, but word goes it's really great for normal map creation.
Then there's also crazybump
www.crazybump.com
ahhh...little helpers...what would we be without them?
This may also help:

Thanks.
I just wanted to stay away from using normals or bumps. I want it to do it only with modelling. For practice mainly.
