Hey, I'm pretty new at corel, so i've planned now to learn traditional painting style (through books in the library) and then use the knowledge in painter. But i got some problems, like these ones:

http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=askiingew0.jpg

1. When i use orange, then on the canvas it gets very wierd. I want a clean normal orange, why does it look like that?

2.When i put my orange on the head of the pinguin, then it wont work at all. I put more and more orange ,and then the orange won't come, but an other diffrent wierd colour like on question nr.1.

3.I want to shade like in the box, but i can't, why can't i? I choose red, and when i put the red colour on the white canvas, then i can't get that pink colour like in the box, why???

So what can i do to fix these problems? Thanks

hi there,

you are using watercolor variants which are designed to do all kinds of weird things like run out in all directions or soak into the paper and what not.

Use a rather simple variant, like a chalk variant or a thick pencil variant, they are much easier to control.

What kind of window is that you shaded your red example in? Is that a Painter window at all?

Hi,

Looking at your screen print, in the Brush Controls' General palette, it appears you've first selected a Digital Watercolor variant, then changed the Dab Type to Watercolor Flat.

Notice that Dab Type: Watercolor Flat is selected and, though they're greyed out now, the following General palette controls are for a Digital Watercolor variant:

Method: Digital Wet
Subcategory: Grainy Digital Wet Buildup

For a Watercolor variant, they should be:

Method: Wet
Subcategory (one of the following options, depending on the specific Watercolor brush variant): Grainy Wet Abrasive, Grainy Wet Buildup, or Wet Remove Density

You've mixed the General palette brush controls for two different brush categories and they won't work together as the brush technology is different for each of these two brush categories, Watercolor and Digital Watercolor.

To paint with smooth color like what you've shown in the boxes in your screen print, do the following:

Restore all brush variants in the currently loaded brush library to their default state:

Brush Selector menu > Restore All Default Variants

If you want transparent watercolor:

Use brush variants from the Digital Watercolor brush category but first take time to read John Derry's Visual Guide for Digital Watercolor (http://www.corel.com/content/pdf/painter8/tutorials/Digital_Water_Color.pdf) so you'll have a better understanding of how these brush variants work.

If you just want opaque color, use simple brush variants from one of several categories. For instance:

Airbrushes' Digital Airbrush
Charcoal's Soft Charcoal (any size)
Oil Pastels' Soft Oil Pastel (any size)
Pens' Flat Color
Tinting's Basic Round
Paint either on the Canvas or on a Layer set to Composite Method Default so the color will remain opaque.

(If you paint on a Layer set to Composite Method Gel, the color will be transparent and darken underlying colors.)

To check the following, look in the Brush Controls' General Palette:

Avoid brush variants that use a Subcategory name that includes the word "Grainy" as that means the brush variant will interact with the currently selected Paper texture and your brush strokes will be textured.

Avoid brush variants that use Method: Buildup as that means color will darken and when you paint on a new Layer, Painter will automatically change the Layer Composite Method to Gel and the brush strokes will not only be darker than your chosen color, they will then be transparent and darken underlying colors.

Does anyone know of a guide to all the different variables used in Painter X Watercolor brushes, similar to John Derry's Visual Guide for Digital Watercolor (http://www.corel.com/content/pdf/painter8/tutorials/Digital_Water_Color.pdf) which is specifically for Digital Watercolor. I would also like an explanation of how the different layer blending modes work.

Hi Malcolm,

John Derry's first Visual Guide for Painter 7 Water Color is available to download in PDF format from my PixelAlley site, along with a note he wrote to me, below the Visual Guide link, that you might find interesting and informative:

A Visual Guide to Corel Painter 7™ Water Color, by John Derry (http://www.pixelalley.com/tutorials/jderry-guide-pdf-downloads.html)

I don't know if John made any changes to the Visual Guide for Painter 8, but you can download it, too, and compare them:

Visual Guide to Painter 8 Water Color, by John Derry (http://www.corel.com/content/pdf/painter8/tutorials/Water_Color.pdf)

To learn about how Painter's Layer Composite Methods work, read the following:

Painter X Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > Layers

Click the plus sign to the left of Layers, then highlight Editing Layers.

On the right panel, click the link named "Blending Layers by Using Composite Methods" to display descriptions and example images for each of the Composite Methods.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Many thanks for these guides. They are just what I was looking for. John seems to have re-formatted and shortened the Painter 8 version of the Watercolor guide but the content is basically the same as for Painter 7. The other guides (Liquid Ink and Keyboard Shortcuts) also look very useful.

Malcolm,

If you're not using Painter 8, be glad. There was a problem with Digital Watercolor in that version that was fixed in Painter IX.

The problem was, wet Digital Watercolor paint was dried, whether or not the artist wanted it dried, when the file was saved, closed, and reopened.

If John mentions that in the Painter 8 Visual Guide for Digital Watercolor, just remember it's no longer a problem.
