How do I go about setting up seperate passes like the pros do?

(ie:
Color Pass
Shaodw Pass
Reflection Pass
Specular Pass
Lighting Pass)

And also can you do certain things like FG or GI passes as well?

Read about Render Layers in Maya Help. It is one of those things that are very well documented with a lot of illustrations and examples. You will be better off with it than waiting for help only from the Internet.

The render layers have built in presets for:

Diffuse = Color Pass
Shadow Pass
Specular Pass

For Reflection Pass check this http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3928518&postcount=8

Regarding Lighting Pass and also things like FG or GI passes as well. If you want to separate the direct from indirect illumination, this make sense only if you have GI or ambient materials in your scene, and yes you can use render layers for that. If you want to separate the textures form the lighting you can do that with render layers as well by putting in one layer all objects without textures and in aonther all textured object with a surface shader material.

Thank you very much for the info. I think that getting a reflection pass that way might be a bit more work than I intended though. I thought there was a way to automate a reflection plate, but I guess not.

Either way, thank you for the info. And I'm going to try that lighting pass also and see how that goes.

Do you know what the textbook blending modes should be set to for different render passes?

Is there a plugin for Maya that's similar to the PSD-Manager plugin for Max?

Found an easier way for the reflection pass. Just make a new render layer and set all of the color/diffuse data to black yet keep the properties and only the reflections will render.

Opps, sorry Bmoner, I thought I was giving you a link from my bookmarks to a big thread with discussions about different possibilities and the dedicated shaders, instead I gave you the link to the single post from Jeremy.

Anyway Julian corrected that. Thanks Julian.

From Puppets website

shaders_p works with mental ray stand alone and all common 3d softwares: Maya, 3DSMax and XSI.
shaders_p compiled for all common platforms: windows32, windows64, linux32 and macOSX.

You may download shaders_p here: http://www.puppet.cgtalk.ru/download/shaders_p_e.shtml
If you have SVN installed you may download latest development version here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/shadersp

Cheers :)
