Hi There!
I prepared my picture "Till Dawn" for the animago 2003 contest. I tried to improve it as much as possible. Thanks for your comments! Really gave me some inspiration
I can't tell you everything I've changed in this pic... I basically went over everything again, added details, tweaked and adjusted. (To the dirtlovers: you feel better, now? ;) )

Hope some of you like it

Because this pic is mostely about colors and lighning, a badly callibrated monitor will destroy the atmosphere, unfortunately. :annoyed: Try a cooler color temperature.
I also noticed it sucks on some TFTs... Don't know what to do angainst it...

And btw here's (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30547&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) the old thread, if you like to compare...

Looks awesome. Can't really put my finger on anything. If I should, then it would be the sense of emptyness as one travels down the image. All the windows are empty. Shouldn't there be drapes, flowers and what not in them?
Just some thoughts - looks smashing, man

Thanks for the feedback!
Can't really put my finger on anything. If I should, then it would be the sense of emptyness as one travels down the image. All the windows are empty. Shouldn't there be drapes, flowers and what not in them? Hehe, yeah! That's what it's supposed to be: empty sad, cold and lonely. The only comfortable place is behind the yellow window. Your eyes are drawn to that point - and it's empty too. But I hope you can feel some live behind it, anyway.
I tried to make the other windows as liveless as possible (without destroying too much realism with it). The picture is very symbolic... Interpret yourself.

Thanks for your oppinion! :)

Yeah, I figured it was something like that :) Just had to try ;)
In that context it works as intended, so more respect to you =)

Wow, really nice work. Good texturing, excellent lighting and an interesting angle. If I should put my finger on anything it would be the scrollwork on the wall in the left side of the pic. It looks flat. Maybe some displacement mapping??? Other than that, it looks awesome.

Wow... nicely done.

I agree with the comment about the lower windows... I understand they are not the focus and will distract the eye, but perhaps something vaguely suggested behind them might make them less... BLANK.

Also, the bas-relief along the left side of the picture on the building face seems odd. Perhaps it is sunk into the face of the building too much, or that it "sticks out" in relief too far compared to how "deeply" it is cut? Seems out of proportion in the Z dimension.

Good luck with the contest!!

Thanks Tommi, for your comment!

It looks flat. Maybe some displacement mapping??? Hmm, yes, but have a closer look. The stonefaces are geometry. It's not just a bumpmap (you can see it if you compare the two columns.)
I'm aware of the problem, that they look rather flat, but the reference is even flatter than my version. It is a stone relief made during the German Jugenstil (Art nouveau). Some kind of 2,5D "painting" ;)
Here I've got another reference image so you can see that some of those reliefs indeed are rather flat:

Thanks very much for your comment!

beautiful but i wouldnt let the reflection of the bright spot hit the window. Personally i think it gives the image to much light.

very beautiful

Looks like better and more realistic the first version for me, this time the bump of wall and lighting don,t looks more realistic compares with the first pic. It,s only my opinion, but I love the first vesion!

OMG, looks like a photo!

I think this version is more realistic due to the skylight (dark below, light(er) at the top of the building)

Nice job

Ye-ha! Thanks for the 5 stars, guys!!! :bounce:

beautiful but i wouldnt let the reflection of the bright spot hit the window. Personally i think it gives the image to much light. Man I hope you are wrong with this one! ;) I've spent sooo much time adjusting the windows' positions and the camera to achieve this effect. :argh: :arteest:
But I'll check wether you're right :)

Looks like better and more realistic the first version for me, this time the bump of wall and lighting don,t looks more realistic compares with the first pic. It,s only my opinion, but I love the first vesion! Well, of course this version is more exaggerated than the first one. You could say that the contrast, dirt and bump are a bit overdone, but hey! It's CG! If it's not dirty, completely wrecked and a hundred years old, everyone tells you it looks like CG! :D

@Aros: Thanks man! I also thought that the higher top-bottom contrast was an improvement. :wavey:

Thank you very much for your comments, folks!

Nice... I just want to see spiderman crawl into that window :) I think you've achieved what you where after.
Good Job!

I realy like what you have going on here and I think there is quite an improvement over the old image. However with the new relief detailing It adds to much weight to the left side of the image and I found that that creates a fighting dynamic between the relief and the yellow window espesialy with the drain pipe running between the two. Saying that I realy like the lighting, I find it quite hard to nail lighting at that time of day, and I think you have got it. I also realy like the hint of red drapes in the one dark window.

That's incredible!
Like some of the others said, the only thing detracting from it is the stonework on the lower left. Maybe consider taking it out completely? (Just because everyone seems to think it's a bumpmap - maybe a future employer would see that and think the same thing without realizing it was actually modelled?)

The lighting is great - I wouldn't change a thing. I especially like how it reacts with the window on the left.

Hey guys!
Thanks for your postings!

@Arrowind: Thanks! Hehe, I don't think a spiderman would fit into that environment. :) He prefers New York rather than Berlin, I guess... ;)

@dbach: hmm. Well I thought that maybe the contrast of the relief is too high, so it would distract the view. And now that you also write it... Maybe I'll just decrease the dirtmap a little in order to make the contrast between wall and relief less strong.

@Aeroplane: thx! :bounce:

@KOBALT_KORE: No I'll not take the reliefs out completely. I think it's really just the contrast that's too high. The image looks somehow unfinished without them. :hmm: And, if someone doesn't believe it's a model - I've some wires to prove, hehe :p
Thanks for your suggestions!

Further critics are always welcome!
