View Full Version : CGocracy - Digg like site for CG
archerx 06-08-2007, 06:42 PM I enjoy Digg.com a lot and thought it would be a cool idea to make a site like it. So I made my own social bookmarking website for CG
But what is it you ask?
It's a user driven social content website. now what the does that mean? Everything is submitted by our community (that would hopefully be you). After you submit content, other people read your submission and vote on what they like best. If your story is good and receives enough votes, it is promoted to the front page for the millions (if the site catches on :p ) of visitors to see.
What can you do as a user? Lots. Every person can vote (help promote), bury (help remove spam), and comment on stories. you can even vote and bury comments you like or dislike. Want to share a video or news story with a friend? Vote for it at www.cgocracy.com (http://www.cgocracy.com/)
So with the help of you guys it can catch on and be really cool, I'm sure Roberto would enjoy this site :)
If you have any comments or suggestions on the site please let me know :)
Don't forget www.cgocracy.com (http://www.cgocracy.com/)

While a neat concept, let's hope it doesn't become an outlet for whiney babies like Digg has.

Let's hope that people join up, submit stories and vote on them :)

Roberto could always post his news there :P maybe I should make an offtopic section since off topic threads are no longer allowed here... what do you guys think?

I worked on the design a bit, but tonight I plan on changing it completely :)
So far, the ball seems to be rolling, stories are being submitted and voted on!

Great stuff! I like the idea of digg like content rating. I am still amazed on how slowly (if at all) internet forums are reacting to this trend.

I have noticed this is not working like Digg, many news have lots of posts are still in upcoming news section and those news have only 2-3 votes are available in the published news.
Its on you that only news you like will be in published news section?
And you have asked why cgbuzz failed...that's the mean reason that they follow just the main outlook but everything not works in the same way.

I let a few stories get published to the front page so that it won't be so empty, But now stories are going to the front page on their own merit.
So no, it won't be just the stories that "I" like but the stories that get enough votes to go to the front page. Not even I as admin can change how many votes a story has.
I hope that clears that :)

I like it so far but you would probably attract more users if the site looked better. Something as clean and as accesible to artists liek cgtalk will go a long way trust me. If this site looked like crap I probably wouldn't be on it.

Previous design was much better than current one, this one is looking crap.
And i still can see stories with 2 votes are on homepage and stories with 5 votes are in unpublished news section. :)

Really? a lot of people didn't like the old design and prefer this one.
Do you guys prefer this design?
Ok I removed all the stories that didn't deserve to be on the front page since there are enough legit stories there now :)
There's currently a little bug that im trying to solve, basicly when you click vote the number doesn't automaticly update. You have to refresh your browser to see the effect. It's purely a cosmetic issues since the votes get counted anyway. But I'm trying to fix it as fast as possible!

Hey Archer,
I don't think the problem lies within the layout alone (which is what you apparantly changed)
Right now everything is sort of ugly :P...here's a list of things I noticed:
-too many clashing themes. first you've got black on white text, then white on blue text, then green on white text and then white on dark grey text. Also some of your backgrounds are gradiated, and some aren't. I'd say pick one "style" and stick with it.
-try to use complementary colors. Orange and blue are complementary (see digg.com). Right now you've got dark grey, blue and green...none of those are complimentary :P
-The dark grey "vote" boxes are really ugly. Try to give them a lighter, friendlier color. Also...on a dark background the aliasing of the characters becomes really obvious
-The 3d blue box (that is apparantly the logo) could use some work. Instead of hard, solid color...try giving it a light gradient (similar to the top bar of the main page)
Overall, the top blue bar looks nice...but the rest of the screen is pretty clashy. Try to unify the rest of the graphics with that top blue bar.
I could be totally wrong on these points from a design standpoint, but those are just my 2 cents ;)

Hey Archer.
First of all, great idea, and great job so far. The fact that you announced it here and there are already a few stories on it is really promising
Just to carry on from what ivanisavich was saying, I think that the design is 80% there, it just needs to be tweaked slightly to clarify the overall theme of the site. I took 2 minutes just to move a few bits around in photoshop. and below is a quick example of what, in my opinion, would make the layout alot easier to read. (The blue colour was just something I happened to choose, and could probably do with being a touch darker.)
http://www.drmerman.com/mattFTP/temp/compacted.jpg
I think the bar you have created at the bottom could be used to seperate the stories into easier to read chunks by adding a simple background style, whilst indenting and compacting the content text enhances that further.
Apart from that, I hope it takes off as it could prove to be a very useful resource.
Cheers,
Dr Merman

as said above you should really do something about the "blue box " logo it looks a bit crappy :p... and also (as i said before) you should add a button like digg has so everyone can add it on their sites and receive some votes (this will also make advertissment for your site by the way). i dont know if you can program that or if you should ask it at pligg..
really think it is an important feature.
about the overall design i ll just wait and see what you get out of the comments above ;-)

(For some reason I'd like the login on the right, because I read sites left-to-right in terms of what I have to do.. and seeing a login box first thing makes me feel forced to login first. I'd be more at ease if it'd be on the right)

Update! I figured out which files is causing all the voting problems so the solution is on it's way :buttrock:
I think it would be best if I just remake the template from scratch that way everything should work perfectly :)

- I'm not sure that that humongous grey box is needed out there to the left. The 'Categories' section could be neatly tidied up into a drop-down box called 'Filters'. The remaining links could be easily relocated to other places, thus providing more emphasis on the news.
- There is far too much space being wasted at the top of the page. Starting with the initial gap right at the top (the shaded light-grey area). That margin can be reduced by half or mroe than half. Then the row with the title. But that's OK I suppose since you want the title to shout out a bit. But if that's the case, then the Search box should not share that space as it has nothing to do with the title. Move it to the blue bar below.
Speaking of the blue bar. It's too tall, and unnecessarily so.
All this is pushing the first headline to almost a third of the way down the page. And if you're not a fan of maximized windows, then it's probably even further down.
- The vote boxes read '5 Vote', or '7 Vote', which sounds rather awkward. Separate the number of votes from the actual voting button. Or do it digg style (7 Votes | Vote)
- Rearrange the sorting buttons at the top so that 'Most Popular' and 'Newest' appear before 'Least Popular' and 'Oldest'
- The Login box needs to be cleaned up. There's too much space between the title and the Username field. Also keep everything left-aligned.
- On the registration page, when you resize the window so that it's narrow, fields float above the column on the right.
Thanks for your efforts. I hope this takes off really well.
