View Full Version : similiar points between maya and max
javabeans 03-18-2003, 09:55 AM i think there must be some similiar points and methods between
max and maya in most aspect:modeling,shader,animation...
could someone give me something such as a list of their correspondences? To a maxtomaya-er,it is a more convenient way to learn maya than
having to fight with maya`s reference manual.
Everything is welcome.

Ack, the Maya help-files.. not.. not very help-y imo :)
There's a .pdf file on Alias's site called "3dMaxtoMaya.pdf" that's pretty helpful, it's 400 kbs worth of "you do it like this in MAX, you do it like that in Maya". It won't magically make sense of everything, but it's nice to have I think.
I'm sorry I can't provide you with a link, I.. can't find it.. It's there anyway, if you can't find it either I'll have another go. Or maybe someone else can point out where it is?
And remember, whenever you end up thinking "goddamit this is such an odd weird program".. well.. then you're right :). It really is :)

Why is it easier to go from max to maya? The reason I ask is because I've been using maya for a year now and coming this october I need to start learning max. I know a LITTLE in max already, but I was just wondering why its easier.

Well becuase you will probably be looking for things in max that aren't there or don't work the same as in maya.
example: in maya you have your polt primitives and your nurbs primitives. In max these are modifiers. You have to go to the mod menu in-order to change the sphere primitive into an edtiable mesh, poly or path and stuff.

Hey there folks, I am using max right now to render my cartoon shaded stuff. I have been using maya for some time, i think that for me going from maya to max is fairly easy. I originally started doing 3d in max like 3 years ago. I have since forgotten everything! oh yah! I do think its easy casue you learn either way. I think every software package has similarites...rendering...ughh...well i just think if youhave some experience going from one 3d progrum to another isnt to difficult.

I went from max to maya... and then about 18months later, went from maya to max... and now ive decided to use both because I like max's modeling but I like maya's everything else (and with Maya 5's new rendering systems, I even like its render)
I must say, its not that hard to switch at all... the most pain in the ass thing when switching apps is the Camera controls.... its abnoxious shit!!
if you from maya to max, you keep rotating in the orthological views turning them into those weird perspective views that have no distance....
and if you from max to maya, you keep zooming it super super close in the perspective and stuff....
but now, ive used em both so much, they are both second nature :D
Cheers,

For some people this is true for some it is not. I've had quite an easy time transitioning from max to Maya. I also had friends in school who simply just didn't get how to do certain things in Maya. There are quite a few similarities (especially since max 5). The gizmos for move, rotate, and scale are almost identical. The hotkeys for those are Identical as well. The dope sheet and curve editor are very similar. They share similar tools for polygon modeling, some through scripts. Certain features, like being able to grab a max or mel script from its window and place it on a shelf as a button  I love that feature. Really there's alot but there's a ton of differences too. I actually founnd Maya's help file to be just as good as Max's when it came to figuring things out.
