View Full Version : Why Digital Watercolor brush would have white edge?
wazai2008 06-08-2007, 03:01 PM Hello guys,a problem has been bothering me a long time in the use of Painter9.5.
First I used Brushes other than Digital Watercolors to paint the bottome layer, then, painted on new layers above with series of Digital Watercolor brush. This action results in the appearance of white edge around the color. It also happens when I apply the Digital Watercolor brush directly on the dried bottom layer
Is there any way I can get rid of the edges in order to get a natrual transition when I'm painting with multiple layers?
Hope to enlighten, thank you!

I think this has been fixed with Painter X that Im using currently, but you should just be able to click "pick up underlying colour" on the layer youre using for digital watercolour and it will blend smoothly with the colour below

Hi,
If you create a new Layer and begin painting on it with Digital Watercolor variants, Painter will automatically change the Layer Composite Method to Gel. This is to give the DWC paint the intended transparent look.
If you change the Layer Composite Method back to Default, you'll see those white edges. It'll also happen if you've already created a new Layer, painted on it with non-Digital Watercolor variants, then paint on it with Digital Watercolor variants. In that case, Painter won't automatically change the Layer Composite Method to Gel.
If you want to paint light Digital Watercolor over darker Digital Watercolor, you'll need to keep the dark Digital Watercolor paint wet.
In the demo below:
The top left area was painted with light color over darker color, both on the Canvas and with the darker Digital Watercolor paint still wet.
The top right area was painted with the same light color on a new Layer automatically set to Composite Method Gel to result in the intended transparent look.
The bottom area was again painted with the same light color on a new Layer automatically set to Composite Method Gel, but this time I changed the Composite Method back to Default.

I think this topic should be stickied. I've seen this kind of thread to many times... along with the antialiasing thing...

Or, before asking a question, we could use the Search feature in this forum and at Conceptart.org's Painter Forum (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=23), where I think you'll find more on this subject than here.
Here's something that should give you a good start understanding Digital Watercolor:
John Derry's Visual Guide for Digital Watercolor (http://www.corel.com/content/pdf/painter8/tutorials/Digital_Water_Color.pdf)
It was written for Painter 8 but it's still useful for Painter IX (IX 9.1 and IX.5) and Painter X.
Plus, Digital Watercolor has been improved since Painter 8 (and 8.1) and we no longer have to worry about wet DWC paint being dried automatically when the image is saved, closed, and reopened.
Digital Watercolor paint stays wet in Painter IX (IX 9.1 and IX.5) and Painter X until we decide to dry it.
