Acually "the omega man" was an adaptation of the book "I am legend".

hope the movie is as good as the book though.

It looks fun. I hadn't heard about this one. I remember when Arnold Swartzenegger was going to lead some kind of huge budged version back in the 90s. The supposed script for that old project used to be everywhere on the internet. I was mainly interested, because it was the inspiration for Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Vincent Price also stared in a film adoptation of the novel (it can be downloaded at archive.org).

This looks very cool, although the scene where he's speeding through the city looks like a video game cut scene, and not in a good way.

The trailer makes me want to read the book. I thought the same thing about the car looking like a video game .

Yes I agree... The book is superb, written by Richard Matheson, whom I've long time admired. Just look at the guys contribution to science fiction and horror:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0558577/

And I've just noticed they're doing a new version of 'The Incredible Shrinking Man' as well! Hmmm...

Man... I am not one to usually complain about book to movie adaptions but this trailer/teaser really seems to loose so much of what was great with the book. The character in the book was completely lonely (no dog), really depressed (contemplated suicide all the time), and an alcoholic. It was a reflection of the time, it was written during the depression but still issues that I think a lot of people can relate to. His neighbor (an infected) taunts him, and stuff like that just points out what a miserable experience he has.

He doesn't drive sports cars or plays golf. My expectations are low, but lets see if they manage to make something interesting out of this modern take on it.

It's hard not to be cynical and think a bunch of producers at the studio felt this is what it had to be to appeal to a large audience. I think they are wrong, but even if this director has some brilliant ideas I doubt the studio is going to let an unproven director get his way.

I love soulsurvivor kind of stories.
Need to pick me up a copy of the book (it's been on my list for quite a while now)

Trailer looks fun (love the startscene of him sleeping in the tub)

"Come out Neville!"

I am a complete sucker for post-apocalyptic/survivor stories & I Am Legend is one of my absolute favourites (Day of the Triffids is still the king though).

When I heard they were (re)making it into a film I got extremely excited, when I learned that Will Smith was the lead I got less excited but, despite the different atmosphere in the trailer (the book is swampingly claustraphobic) it does look pretty good.

It's obvious they'll drop a lot of the darker elements from the original text but even if they just carry the bare bones of the original premise it could still be a great story and a blockbuster.

I hope.

looks pretty cool..other than the omega man, this reminds me of The Quite Earth (http://imdb.com/title/tt0089869/)..which is a really cool film for those who have not seen it

I doubt its blockbuster material, as one guy walking about on his own is going to get boring rather quickly. Depends what this unseen menace will turn out to be(I never read the book or watched The Omega Man) I suppose.

I'm not too happy with some bits in the trailer as it seems like another promotion for Will Smith: "YES! I AM WILL SMITH, THE LAST MAN ALIVE! I HAVE NO COMPETITION NOW!"

Still, the idea is different enough and I will go see it to find out what the story is.

I agree . To me ,Will Smith always play the same role just like Morgan Freeman does. This is certainly not a bad thing but you get the idea.
BTW , I read Matheson's novel ,in french, it was good .(Not Great)

I read an interview with him in Empire....he said he would never play a bad buy, or any nagative character...he only wanted to play people that his son could look upto. Personaly I think thats a pretty wierd attitude for an actor.

Why ? If he can be picky about the kind of roles he wants to play, why not ? this is as good a reason as any if not better ...

that is besides that fact that I think he wouldn't make for a good villain at all ...

I'm not expecting this to be a smart or thought-provoking film, but a fun popcorn flick. Like Smith's last "concept blockbuster", I Robot was. I hope just to be entertained. There I set my expectations, no higher.

And the VFX in the trailer look pretty slick.

mushroomgod

wierd because I think he would dismiss a role because he does not agree with the character...I mean, Anthony Hopkins isnt a serial killer, and nor does he agree with killing people (or eating them)...but he made a great Hanibal Lecter...Same goes for Christopher Lee, im pretty sure he does not think Dracular a good guy :)

Ofcouse he can do what he want....i just think if he always wants to play the "hero" hes going to have a very one dimentional career....he can have anything he wants, and if thats what he wants then that fine...still think its wierd though :)

valid points you make ...

the best actors are the ones that can take on any role and set it down with a believable force ...

still think it's 'noble' to only do roles his son can look up to

Oh my god, it's like the director went to the composer and said,

"I WANT THE REQUIEM FOR A DREAM SOUNDTRACK!"

And the composer said,

"Well, I can't, it's copyrighted."

To which the director retorted,

"Well, change like two notes, and it'll be different, right? GIMME GIMME GIMME!"

(still looks cool)

This sure looks very interesting, and this is what Resident Evil should've been like, tale of a lone survivor.

As for his acting, he was quite decent in Pursuit of Happiness I think. He just doesn't have that "bad guy" look. He's the Prince of Bel Air after all, slightly goofy looking dude with big ears. I don't think people will take him seriously as a bad guy.

yeah the car did look like a video game, I though it switched for some reason LOL, only to discover that it was supposed to look real

I think i would read the book now... the cryptic and over the top score made the trailer less attractive IMO and even rather funny at one point...

I'm glad someone else noticed that too. It's so very, very close I wonder if it's actually going to be credited?

And the shot of the car does look a little "gamey".

Yes that's the point of his actions to limit the roles takes on, not weird at all. I'm sure he could do alot more but this is tobe a better role model in the eyes of his son.

I don't see the Will Smith promotion either, he has awards, thats all the promotion you need :). It just looks like an interesting film from the outset. Would be nice to see as I like the original story!

The music was really odd - the music you mention seems to crop up quite a bit in trailers, maybe they asked for something similar but slightly different?

This story was actually originally made as "The Last Man On Earth" with Vincent Price
http://imdb.com/title/tt0058700/ Then it was remade as Omega Man.

I've been looking forward to this since the previous incarnation with Arnold as the lead. This hopefully will be a cool, fun adaptation.

but the point is, he's acting. he's pretending to be someone else, reading lines someone else wrote. So, whether it's a positive or negative role model, it doesn't matter - it's not him.

I'm a better role model, because i pretend to be one? That's not a very good lesson at all.

now, I can see if his son isn't old enough, and can't tell or understand that he's acting, but his son is old enough to understand that - heck, he was in a movie with him last year.

and, just out of curiousity, what award(s) are you referring to? Besides MTV or Blockbuster awards, of course.

War of the Worlds + Will Smith = Independence Day :)

No no no! I mean, it's great that the movie includes acres of CG and so on - it's jobs, yes? - but this is not Matheson's book which was, of course, so spectacularly simple and strange. Frankly, I'm surprised that they didn't retain the Omega Man title, because at least that would've given opportunity for rampant product placement ("...when you need to know precisely when the sun sets, you need something reliable. You need OMEGA.").

looks pretty cool. I am a complete sucker for post apocalyptic movies/zombie survivor films.
I LOVED "last man on earth" with vincent price (you can get it on the internet archives, well worth it) and omega man was ok, though lost a lot of the creepyness that made LMOE so good.
at least this looks great, visually.
I'm in :)

He's done Ali and that dude in Pursuit of Happiness. But I think the one dimensional hero works for him. Will is one of the few people who has conquered anything he has put his name on.

He had a successful television show that could be enjoyed by the whole family.
He has had a successful movie career and he still puts butts in seats and entertains
He has had a successful music career

I think it's commendable he still wants to portray a hero and not anything negative. Especially for his children.

Reminds me of John Wayne, he worked best when he was being the good guy!

No it isn't. Omega Man is an adaptation of I Am Legend (the original novel), but with all the vampire elements taken out. This current version should be more like the original novel, or I hope. The trailer doesn't say anything about vampires either--we'll see.
