Any ideas how I did this? One minute I was working away, everything seemed in order, then next time I try to open up the project I get an error saying that it can't read the data in the file. My character is still there but it's frozen, and there is no animation on anything anymore.

I'm already almost back to where I started, so I'm not terribly bummed but any suggestions on how I can keep from having this happen in the future?

Hey there,
I've had this sort of thing happen too. I was once working on a time-sensitive test for a company, and I saved out one of the files, then re-opened it a few minutes later to find it completely gone.

I don't know if your situation is due to the same problem, in fact, I'm fairly certain it's not, but what happened in my case was that the computer I was saving to had run out of memory, and when I tried to save, instead of saying "Hey, can't do it," it saved what it could, which was 0kb. Opened up the file, no animation... grrrrrrrrrr...

Even if you figure out what happened in this case, and resolve the issue, you're always going to run into similar situations. The best solution: save drafts. In the save>options box there's a check box for "incremental saves." This will create a folder inside of your project and any time you save, it will save out something along the lines of "YourFileName.01.ma," "YourFileName.02.ma..." and so on.

I've gotten into the practice of always keeping "Incremental Saves" on, and every now and then, I'll save out a new version of the file. My files are always called "GenericFileName_v01.ma" (v, of course, being "version"), and so on, that way I'm familiar with what the latest version is.

I hope this helps! Good Luck

Travis

I'll have to make sure I always have that checked off, I tried to save in increments as well but it didn't work too well because I always ended up just saving onto the old file. Thanks alot!
