View Full Version : Maya city wip
curannon 06-07-2007, 05:16 PM Hi. This is obviosly not a mattepainting though I use photoelements and similiar tecniques to produce the picture. (it's a crappier version of a matte one could say :) ) It will be a background illustratration for a slot game once it is finshed. I wonder if any of you talented people out there has any suggestions or tips how to improve the image and push it closer to matterealism. (there is of course some stuff in the foreground that I haven't worked on yet)
I made two colorvariations just to see if it made any difference. What do you think?
Cheers guys

I like it. Very good start: nice composition balance and rythm, nice color scheme. I need to see more details in it because this one has a strong base.
Keep it up man! ;)

good start ! compositiong is nice and color palette is interesting too !
I think that to push it to more realistic you need to check the scale of some of the elements as well as the range of details.... work in a bit more atmospheric perspective as well !
The scale of the different elements on in relation to the others is going to help you also with the impression of distance (like the difference between the middle temple and the back left one). It's also going to help with the detailing (more details up front less to the back). You can also try to break the very straight (mathematical) lines as they rarely happen in real life.
A quick trick we use here to help with the detailing is a 3 level perception of details. Level 1 is only the overall shapes, level 2 as the basic details and refined subshapes, level 3 as all the fine things and obsessive detailing. That you can rapidly tell is something is missing if one level of detail is not present. This usually helps getting rid of the blockiness of elements.
can't wait to see more ! (sorry for the long post !)
It's cool to see a bit less conventionnal color palettes.
cheers

Thanks alot yellowdog. really good tips. not sure i was totally clear on the 3 step detailing process. I'll ponder on it :) I'lll try to add more atmospheric perpective to give more depth. Also try and remove some of the fine detalis, noise in the elements further away like the trees and in that way further give the appearnce of depth like you said if thats what you meant. will get back with an update soon. Hopefully i'll get a chance to do some more paintings to practice my tecnique.
Thanks Ivy. Glad you like the look and colors

Ok. did some changes. This is where I got. Need to move on to different projects for awhile now but i'm very glad for feedback and critiques.
Hopefully I will have time to get back to the image later and maybe do a camera projection.
Did 3 colorvariations. which one do you prefer?

try to keep the foreground elements with their natural colors. I mean to make the trees green because for the foreground there is not so mush horizon haze to "eat" their color.
and the structures are "too clean". try to add some kind of brick details and bumps and it will be just perfect. ;)
and also try to clean up the edges to the front (left-up) leaves.

thanks man. Will dirty the structures up abit and clean the edges for the leaves. I'm abit sloppy I know :) I'll probably go with the blue-green picture because it looks most natural to me.
Cheers!

This realy is a masterpiece man. I prefer the first because its got the original colors and all that. The other two look more like just a photo with a color balance over it.
Real nice job, seriously.
