View Full Version : Is maya bug free?
javabeans 03-18-2003, 03:25 AM Having using 3dsmax for nearly 5 years and along with the larger
data set of our scenes,we found that we should switch to a more
stable and affordable application. The qustion is :Is Maya bug free? Please give us some advise according to your experience with Maya.Thanks.

What do you mean by bug free. Maya has bugs but sometimes the bug only occurs with certain variables involved. What are you planning on doing with it? With that said, I wouldn't say it's buggy either though, so far I like it much better for animation than max or lightwave. I don't think many programs are completely bug free. I could be wrong though. I haven't use Mirai or Wings or any of those programs.
Bottom line though...my experience with Maya has been a good one.

javabeans,
my only problems with crashing in maya have been it colliding with issues with video cards ... it's almost a golden rule with Maya - if it crashes - check your hardware drivers. Besides that I can't say it's ever crashed on me.
Sometimes, however, I have to crash out of it if I type say 4 iterations on a polygon smooth operation when I only intended two ... would be nice if you could 'esc' out of that computational madness - anyhoo, I digress ....

It's a program right? None are ever bug free. Although I keep hearing about the uncrashable C4D. In my experience with Maya so far it's way more stable than Max if that's what you're worrying about.

Maya has a much richer and fuller history of production than Max, and the benefits for that are seen in an exceptionally stable platform. When we spend $100m on a movie we need as much 'up time' as possible, and that means no time wasted trying to solve problems or deal with corruption or crashes or data recovery. Plus we need software that is easy to use because the things we are doing are complex enough already. We use Soft and Maya (along with prop software) because they are production proven stable release software with a pedigree of ease and flexability in a tough environment.
I don't know Max at all, but i would trust Maya with my movie. I can't say more than that....
And no i don't work for Alias | Wavefront :-)

Thanks good guys!
Your valuable experiences have encouraged our studio to switch
to a more stable pipeline though it means some more investment.
And in fact,it was a number of big data set rendering issues that
make us thinking of this kind of switch.

Do you wanna use it with Linux, OS or NT-based system? I think there are some differences in stability.

Maya isn't bug free...but it's been the most stable 3D ap I've worked with. (As of v. 3.x)
I recently picked up the current issue of 3D World magazine. They have a series of articles asking how users would re-design their software of choice to be better.
It was interesting that more stability was mentioned for other apps (Max being one I believe) but not mentioned for Maya.
They had other requests to be sure, but stability wasn't one of them.
bug free doesn't exist for sure, but you should experience much less trouble using maya under linux than you will using 3dsmax under win98 !
maya might be crashy sometimes, but doesn't happen much.
therefore, it doesn't have the powerful recovery features that max has, but in most cases, it's not necessary.

Maya runs flawlessly for the most part, that is until one tires to test its limits. It has a real hard time when you crank the variables on things such as raytracing and caustics. But in my personal opinion I am glad I made the transition from 3DStudio to Maya.

Interesting thread! I would say compared to MAX Maya is for the most part bug free. I have no experíence of MAX 5, but earlier versions are very buggy. Maya has it's bugs too, but as I said, compared to MAX... :insane:

I do find maya far more stable than most other 3d apps( including xsi which has some major stability issues) But I think that the stability is due in part to the fact that it was developed on a unix derivative which is a far more stable os than windows. I'm not going to sya that max'x bugs are windows fault nut look at softimage|3d which is pretty stable ( was developed on a unix system) and XSI which was developed on a windows system then ported to other oses( XSi should be a lot more stable for the dough that they are asking for and for that matter so should max)
However you should realize that max has a slew of legacy code still present from it's inception. So tacking on new features as well as not re-writing already buggy code does add to max bugginess. By the way i read that article too, I think houdini was also one of the apps left out of the stability issue.

When your dealing with huge data sets in any software you should look into separating your scenes into separate pieces for render layers. Also look into creating lowrez versions or use camera mapping for objects in the background. I see alot of people try to do way too much in camera when they should be looking toward a mix of 2d and 3d with the compositor. This is with any 3d program whether it be maya or 3dsmax.

ok this time more serious..
maya is full of bugs in every corner of the app..
but during a time of 5 years (since maya 1.0 beta 5) i have only stumbled once in a bug that was a showstopper for us (i think that was a particle render bug in 3.0.)
since we had quite some licenses alias gave us an update only for that special case. but only since that bug was already known and worked on... i would not bet on that in these days and with only a few licenses and a lousy reseller..
nevertheless: all the other bugs i found were either not critical for a production (which might have been luck) or our team was able to find workarounds in some short time.
i think that wont be much different in other apps. only that maya has really been often used in bigger productions and thus show stoppers are mostly eliminated which i would not sign for other apps.
but mostly all this discussion is the same like PC vs. MAC.. there is no real loser or winner - only peoples preferences
