"Andy Serkis wrote the music, then [animation director] Randy Cook conducted it, and the animators are the ones playing the music that you see in the film." -- Bay Raitt

I like that analogy. It acknowledges the fact that all members of the team were artists who were all essential to the success of Gollum. All sharing in the creation of a stellar performance.

Jason: What's with WETA snatching up all you former software dev guys? :) Nothing like having folks who know the tools inside and out, eh?

BTW: Anyone else see Gollum on Saturday Night Live giving his Oscar picks? Very life like performance. Was that mostly mo-cap or keyframed? Either way, you WETA guys should be proud. Quite funny. Although I hadn't noticed before how much Gollum looks like Chris Kattan in a lumpy costume....

"We deserves it, my precious, we deserves it..."

Thanks for the cool link. :applause: That's a great bit of insight into the use of Mirai and other techy details! I'm betting that the artists like Bay, Jason and the others are ready for some serious r&r after reading about the amount of work involved creating the magic and illusion that is Gollum.

I'd like to see a bit more info on the process of creating Gollum's eyes.

http://www.fallonfey.com is currently hosting the Weekend Update with Gollum video clip in everyone's favorite format: RealAudio. ( Follow the Salma Hayek link in the left frame. Then the RealAudio link at the top. The Gollum segment is from 8:04 to 9:58 in case you want to skip the rest.)

The SNL Superbowl Half Time episode also had a Gollum segment. Which is on the previously mentioned site, and also mirrored here:

(The Gollum bit is from 3:37 to 5:52)

Certainly a testament to the success of the character that there is enough personality to properly impersonate. :)

hmmm after d/loading those two clips 28.7 MB in total and installing real.crap, i must say i was a little disappointed

/me thinks the animation was, well a little false, doesn't do gollum any justice
