View Full Version : Rigging Reel 2007
fatsk8er18 06-05-2007, 07:24 PM Hey all,
Heres my rigging demo reel for this summer. I just graduated from Pratt institute, focusing in character animation, and rigging( td ). trailer, first 2 characters and prop rigs shown are for my thesis "TVdinner: food for the really hungry". the 2d arm is a work in progress right now but figured i'd throw it up for now. The scripts were made on extra time, one using syflex hair curve to create modeling and rigging tools, the other is a prop rigger with multi animatable world space locations that allows the prop to swap inbetween them. and the potato rig, is from a fellow pratt undergraduates thesis "Le Pomme de Terre" by bryan eck. comments, critique's, questions ? watch out for "TV DINNER " to be posted here soon.

Hey Frank,
Nice stuff!
Here are my comments:
Pros:
-All your rigs looks great! The potato rig interested me the most, with its ability to flatten against the ground surface. VERY cool feature.
-The rope things were also EXTREMELY cool. I could see that coming in sooo handy (since it takes forever to manually place string/rope)
-Then bendyness of your arm rig is nice and the other less-focused-upon rigs (like the couch, fridge etc) also looked to be working well.
Cons:
-I'd say take out the small bits (trailer, couch, fridge) and concentrate more on the rope thing (as well as the other main parts, as I mention below). The small bits with the furniture didn't seem to incorporate anything "new" (ie they just seemed to be basic wiring/squash controls/FK/etc)....so they weren't up to the standard as your other rigs in my opinion.
-It was VERY difficult to see what was going on in your first character rig (that big fat guy) because you kept panning/zooming so often. I'd say re-record that segment and try to keep the camera stationary. Only swivel it if you're moving over to a new part of the body.
-Also...I wish you would have concentrated a little more on the potato rig. At the end you started slicing away at him or something, and I couldn't really see what was going on because you were doing it so fast. I was like "Woah what's he doing? That looks cool!" but you never explained it.
-In my opinion, I think you should go through all of your rigs, pick the top 3-5 features for all of them, and then go through and concentrate on just those (complete with titles/subtitles to explain what rig-feature you are demonstrating). Right now you're trying to display too much in too little time, imo (despite the fact that it's a whole bunch of REALLY cool stuff).
5 stars from me!

hey cool stuff man! that dynamic rope thing and the bouncing head should've been on the front of your reel imo... with the heads geo getting sliced on playback time? sweet!

Hey,
Thanks for your comments guys, now that im finally finished with school, its good to see my work out to the public.
ivanisavich :
The potato rig was prolly one of my fav rigs, had alot of potential for some fun rigging. The rope script came in very handy, my friend needed a forest full of viens, so i figured i could right a script, so he or anyone who is not that familiar with dynamic curves could go at it and have fun. Later I also found out that it was good for rigging, so I added a attribute that created it so it also adds a joint chain to that curve, and a default basic setting for dynamics. ( example, those trees were rigged with that same script.)
About the reel in gerneral I agree with you on some what i put in to what shouldn't really be in there. It was my first reel so I figured that I show as much as possible and a good variety. But seeing it now Im thinking about what fits and what doesnt. Yeah and some if it is pretty fast, speed it up to much.
ragdoll:
Thanks for your opinion on how to organize my reel, Im still debating on howthe whole thing should fit togethor. as for the potato and the slicing your talking about. yeah its all realtime. He needed the potato to get sliced in specifis spots, and for it to be 100% controlable. so its all rigged with non linears,fk joints, and my prop rig script to make it able to go from world position, to local potato position.
cgmadvin: Thanks for your comment, glad you liked my work.

hehe i think that's one of the best rigging reels i've seen so far - great job. Slicing of potato absolutely rocks, the rope looked great.

hey buddy,
i really liked your reel, you had some awesome stuff. i would just say that it might he helpful to pur your best stuff first (the potato and vines) although everything in it is great. i just think that maybe it could be re-organized to be even better! does anybody know any other ways to do a rigging reel besides doing in software captures of it in use? ..just wondering

Great reel! I SO want to use those rigs to animate to. Very appealing and animation friendly with all of the squash and stretch capabilities.
I don't like how the music cuts so abruptly at the end though... also, I feel it could have been a little shorter in length. I already got the idea that you know what you're doing with the first few rigs. You lost me with the 2D arm... there were so many controls that made it seem like it would be a headache to animate with.
The first and second piece are your strongest in my opinion. Overall, I really liked it. I think you shouldn't have any problem finding work with that. Congrats on finishing school and good luck with your job search!
