Here is character concept that I finished coloring with Photoshop. Pretty much a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle on major steroids and a big stick!! :)

The image is great. How have you done it? It's painted or modeled? I like it :beer:
The only thing to say... why the halo? I think it could be more great if you add a dark environment.

If he is reptilian, its strange for him to have nipples, but sometimes you gotta forget about logic. Bookmarked your website too, inspirational.

Thanks for the props guys.
The glow thing is just something that I did to separate the character from the black BKG. I'm doing a series of images so I want them to have a consistent feel.
And yeah he is amphibious, and yes he does have nipples. I've started to notice I put the damn things on all of my creatures. Oh well, just call it a flaw or my weird art style... whatever that's just the way these things come out. I dunno??? Hope it's not too disturbing!

Actually the nipples look kinda cool on the character! Sure wish I could produce art like that. Would you consider making a tutorial on your painting technique? The Keeper character is great as well.:buttrock:

watch out on the hands of your "keeper" one is smaller than the other and also holding the sythe at a different angle.

aaaaagh looks like the black outline epidemic struck again. :\
the anatomy and all that looks great. the texturing on the shoulder looks flat compared to maybe the forearms or the inner thigh. the glow stinks.. it'd be cool to see him in a leafy environment. gj tho

I like the painting style of the character and its skin.
Not sure tho about the orange glow. But I guess it does help pop it out from the background since it is a concept.

Cool, I made it on the front page...yeah!!!!! Well here is a little info on how I'm making my illustrations. I'm drawing with a blue lead pencil and then going over it with a regular pencil for the real dark lines, then I'm scanning it in to the computer and painting it with Photoshop. I'm trying to keep everything on layers that can be adjusted with hue/sat adjustment layers. I'm hoping this will allow me to go back and play with different color combinations for character variants! I'll try to post some examples of that soon!
Everybody thanks for the critiques, the bad thing is that I consider these things to be done at this point. I do plan on building these in 3D some day so I'll be fixing things at that stage, just wanted to get the idea out of my head and get some color on the drawings!

that is ace, man. :applause: i love everything about it, except maybe the nipples are a bit odd on him. other than that, fantastic job.
freakin awesome, man. i love how you achieved the musclemass but still had room for the loose webbing here and there in the design.

Here is how I made the Tortosaur skin.

In the image above you can see at the beginning that I created a black and white repeating pattern in Photoshop of some turtle like scales. I then used this map with the emboss filter to produce a bump map. I then created a color greenish color layer. Create a layer above that and set it to screen, now paint with the black and white pattern and you will see that everywhere you have white in the pattern it will lighten the layer below. Now create a layer above that and set it to overlay and start painting with the grayscale bump pattern that you created this will bring out the shape of the scales more and make them pop. The last thing I did was filled a channel with the black and white pattern then used this channel as a selection and then on a new layer started painting dirt onto the scales.

Nice trick. I actually use a different method everytime i make a new skin or texture for any of my works. Most of the times i do not rememebr what the steps were. Mostly becoz is always adding/substracting something that i thing it needs to look different.

Been a fan of your work for awhile man, and now that I see you're adding color to those wonderful sketches I'm in awe! I love the textures, the nipple does look odd but hell it's well done! heh

First off thanks lil' dragon! I'm very proud of my award!! Now like I said in a previous post I do plan on building this creature in 3d some day. Recently I've become very interested in doing rational sculptures using super sculpey. This is a lot of fun and I've been learning a lot form the forums over @ http://pub76.ezboard.com/fplbbmemberssitefrm17 this is the Sculpting with the Shiflett Brothers forums and they rock!! Some of the work over there is just simply amazing! Any who I did a sculpt of the Tortosaur's head and I'd like to show it. I plan on using the pictures I took of the sculpture as a templates in Maya to build a 3D version in the computer. Guess I'll get going on that this weekend.

Hello there again,
Well I just wanted to show an example of how you can paint in Photoshop with layers and use hue/sat adjustment layers to quickly make color variations of your original. Just look at the above Tortosaur skin example for a brief explanation on how to set up the layers. Now just take the base (green tones) layer and desaturate that layer and add a hue/saturation adjustment layer to it. Now you should easily be able to change colors on the bottom layer without effecting the scales and bumps on top.
