Hello all! only been playing with zbrush for a few days, and not making a spectacular amount of progress. i'm generally a 2d artist, i've been using photoshop since i was about 10 (thats 12 years) and have also done quite a bit of traditional sculpture (from metalwork to polymer clay models). i've seen a few youtube tutorials on a few things 'zbrush' and had a bit of a play around with polyspheres and making a head from a sphere. (see pic in link below)

I'm quite embarressed to ask as there's some absolute Guru's kicking about this site, but then i thought that there's no BETTER place to ask than here really. Basically what i want to know is, where's the best place to 'start learning' from a beginner's pace to something more challenging? I really dont understand the whole rendering aspect. Can i use Zbrush as standalone and achieve decent rendering results from it? I just dont understand how i can achieve a high-quality render from a sculpted sphere etc. I think i may be tripping over my words, so i'll leave it in the hands of you guys to pick me up a little bit.

Oh and could someone PLEASE give me some guidance as to whether to go down the Maya/XSI/3ds Max route? Which would you say is the easiest to get to grips with?

Pleeease? Any DVD/Book recomendations of where's best to 'start from'? Im using Zbrush 3 by the way.

First off...for learning zbrush (like I am currently) I would just go over the tutorials on their website www.pixologic.com (http://www.pixologic.com) and start experimenting and making your own stuff.

As far as 3D programs go...and you really are starting off in the bizarro land of 3D. Zbrush is unlike any other 3D app out there...it's up to you. I don't know how many times I've heard the "which app should i learn???" question. Those big 3 can all do about the same stuff with varying degrees of difficulty. It's really up to you which you want to use. You just basically have to get in there and try it yourself for a few weeks or months to really get a handle on it. Personally, I would recommend 3ds max. It is simple enough to pick up for the beginner. Maya tends to be a little more technical and I haven't really used XSI enough to say although people like that one a lot too. I know maya has a free personal learning edition you can download for free and see if you could install a 30 day trial of max from a friend or something and do the tutorials in the help files and online and find out for yourself. I started out in lightwave but eventually moved over Max and have also done some Maya. Max is about all I use nowadays besides the learning of zbrush.


PS- You'll get better responses to your post if you give it an appropriate title and probably post in an XSI, Maya, or Max forum.

Thank you Japetus. Im going down the XSI route. Spent all day with Zbrush yesterday and tought myself a hell of a lot. Having lots of fun :)
