Can't wait to see this flick.. Love how some of you have negative crap to say everytime. Half the fun is to read these post just to see you self proclaimed cg gods criticize stuff that you probably couldn't do. Oh well... Can't wait to see this flick. The transformations ALONE are incredible...

I don't want to offend wierdostudio by having an opinion that differs from his/hers and I am certainly no CG God, self-proclaimed or otherwise.

But I really don't like the speed skating movement on bone crusher. Aesthetic preference I guess. I'm not familiar with that transformer so maybe that is how it's supposed to move?

I'm not offended by difference of opinion Slurry. Hell thats human nature so maybe i should take back my earlier statement as to not cause a war on this board which is not my intention.. As stated before though i can't wait to see this film. I hope its a great film.

I want to hear optimus speak.. :P

And perhaps it is still an early shot that he showed but the sequence looked... cgish. Now I know that may sound like a stupid comment, but I can't really explain what I mean. There is just something off, the robots just don't seem to "fit" in with the scene ..

Bah

am excited for it though.

Cheers mate. I shouldn't be so sensitive but the argument that if you can't do better than you can't offer a critique or an opinion is a tired one.
Hopefully this will be a fun movie and I'm glad people are excited for it's release.

I wasn't super hot on the speed skating either. And honestly, I think the trailer was pretty cool but this scene really highlights how excessively busy the designs are.* They really both look like bipedal junkyards. I also assume that's not the final audio/VO!**

I'll still see the movie, but I'm probably going to need a couple of drinks first.

*No, I'm not a better designer then whoever did these. That doesn't mean they couldn't possibly be designed any better, considering one of the top FX houses in the world did them.
**No, this does not mean I am a better audio director.

I wasn't big on the designs either, but they've grown on me a lot. Seeing the clips has really helped. The feeling I get from it is that, unlike the cartoon versions, these things really are alien. I think, through the walkcycles, the skating, and all the bits of busy detail that don't read well to us, he's trying to accent their otherworldliness. They're sort of recognizable, but not really. It looks like they have a purpose, they were built a specific way, but we don't know enough about them to say what exactly it is. Mirror universe stuff. I dig it.

Yes, I wasn't sure about the designs at first but I agree that they add to the alien effect. Despite everything that's happening in that brief clip, it's very easy to follow the action which is a nice change from a lot of actions films. I've never enjoyed any of Michael Bay's films, but this looks like a good popcorn flick. I'm looking forward to getting lost in this world for a couple hours.

the quality of the clip is pretty bad.
looks and sounds like a pirated copy filmed with a handheld in a movie theater.
Besides that this looks pretty cool. looking foward to it.

Looks good to me!

I think the speedskating thing is a neat idea. He looks totally wicked surfing through the asphalt jungle, with the wind blowing through his hair and the sand shimmering between his toes--oh wait, that's a different movie.

Critiques or no critiques, it seems to me from what I've seen that this movie will probably set a new bar as far as CG in Hollywood. One question I have is, who lost more hair on this one, the modelers, animators, or texture guys? I'm hoping when the DVD comes out, there is some badass extra features on the making of the film with some in-depth coverage of the digital pipeline. That would be interesting!

I agree with everyone who says the designs are too busy. For me its hard to get a read as to what I'm looking at. Where are the arms, legs, head? When they're tumbling over the side of the freeway it just looks like huge hunks of twsted metal. If I have to spend too much time deciphering what I'm seeing then it takes me out of the experience.

I'm still excited to see the movie and I think they look great.

I'd say it's the riggers, or at least a tie between riggers and modelers...

Yeah I think I understand what your saying...the problem isnt with the CGI, but that maby the whole concept of 50 foot alien fighting robots is just a little too much to believe even with the fantastic CG...but I think they got it as real looking as they could.

rblitz7, ya I was actually thinking if that was the reason to myself, but I dunno really. Perhaps it was just the quality of the clip?

I'm not saying the clip doesn't look realistic becuase I can't see it good enough to judge it.

In my town we have a 30 to 40 foot metal statue of a cowboy.
When you look at it, it looks like a 40 foot metal cowboy. It doesn't look CG!
If someone were to make a life size metal statue of Prime. It wouldn't look fake, CG or composited into your vision.
If it looks cg-ish I wouldn't say it was becuase you never seen a 50 foot robot before.

As long as they transform, fight and blow stuff up, I don't see how this movie could fail. Wow, I think Michael Bay finally found a movie that he's perfect for.

As for believability, as long as the robots feel like they're actually part of the scene, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief.

I feel as if I'm the only geek online who has virtually no interest in seeing this film, other than as a giant (admittedly impressive) ILM demo reel.

Maybe it's my age; I'm 46, so I was in my 20s when the cartoon was airing, and had no interest then in what struck me as a 30-minute commercial for toys. Hell, someone mentioned "Optimus Prime" to me last year, and I said "who?" Literally never heard that character name before, and had no idea he/it was associated with "Transformers."

Now, if they made a live-action Johnny Quest, or Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato, or Space Ghost, or the Herculoids... Yeah, I could get behind that. But to me, "Transformers" looks no more interesting than any other bloated, explosion-laden summer F/X film.

I was a kid (like 10 or 11 I think) when most of those cartoons were in syndication, but I remember space ghost and the Herculooooooooids!!! It would be cool to the Herculoids made live action.

I finished the 2nd game on PS1, started the 3rd one but haven't really played it properly. I haven't got the fourth one yet. I'll probably import it from the States later this year.

btw, your PM inbox is full so I couldn't reply.
