Are there any recent and decent free 3D-engines out there?

look towards Quake. i think they give up there old engines for public use. also, the engine that runs Tribes is like $100 smackers. although, there are some strings attached. that's all i know.

programming forum, cool! could this be used for game MODDING too?

Try looking at flipcode.com. They have a lot of information there.

You can find a list of 3d engines some of which are free on the links page http://www.flipcode.com/links/

Torque is only the engine behind Tribes2(the game sucks but the engine is good for $100)

(im a hardcore t1 player so im kinda biased like that :p )

http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/

"Tenebrae is a modification of the quake source that adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake. Stencil shadows allow for realistic shadow effects on every object in the game world. Per pixel lighting allows you to have fine surface details correctly lit. These are essentially the same algorithms as used by the new Doom game."

very nice stuff for such an old engine!

also, tribes2 didn't suck. it had alot of bugs that gargegames final fixed. can't say tribes1 sucked, that game was fun!

which version of quake is that? thats really great work on their part

and i just dont like the gameplay aspects of t2, Dave G made them change too much about it, enough so that it wasnt the same game(the things that made tribes fun were almost all taken out :annoyed: :thumbsdow )

That's a great, commercial and totally free german Engine of a recently release game. Everything is open source, but you may need some programming skills to start writing an editor for it and stuff. We used it for some time but then made the step to start writing our own DirectX 9.0 Engine.

What about Blender's game engine compared to the others? Anybody with some experience?

There are alot of 3D engines out there for you use but you need to define the question a little more.

For example,

What type of engine are you looking for? such as indoor or outdoor engine?

That makes a big difference in your search because most free engines will either offer one or the other.

What type of model support do you need? 3DS, OBJ, .X etc..

What graphics API pipeline are you or your coding team most comfortable with? DirectX, OPENGL, GLIDE etc...

What programming language should it support? VB, C, C++, JAVA

Does the engine have to support Animation? if so how?

etc, etc...

But to help you on your search here is one that I have been looking at its called ORGE (http://ogre.sourceforge.net/) and it seems promising.

To be honest I have been considering building my own if I could find the time..but Im still considering it.

Good luck on your search.

Thaks for the response! I go check out the links.

Kid Mesh:
-I'm looking for an indoor engine
-Building the programming team is ahead, so Api pipeline is not declared yet.
-Engine has to support bones animation, morph and phisics would be nice too.
-I'd like to create fine graphics, so graphical features are important, maybe a cartoon shader render method would come handy but not the primary thing.
-I'd like to use it for commercial development.

I have some starting projects in mind for a small team, and with today's many free apps it's possible to make good low budget games.
(Think of Blair Witch movie)

I welome any suggestions or questions.

AFAIK quake engine is free for free purposes (projects released under GPL, with public source code included), for commercial purposes it costs 10000$.

ciao :)

Well IMHO Quake is biatch to work with ... its C and not commented hardly... Carmack is the man dont get me wrong but his coding style is quarky...

If you are really looking for an engine.. then pick one with support and good docs... trust me... you will need it....

Also Im not sure so dont quote me but I think with all of the engines available by ID you users will have to have the game CD as well....I will have to check to be sure but I know its something like that...

Someone earlier mentioned "Nebula".... that is worth checking out...seriously

My encounters and experiences as a graphic artist with the torque engine is that it's extremly powerful if your programmer implants some new shaders etc.. Extremly userfriendly etc..
