Ok, I'm going to be the black sheep here and make an entry that's just not funny at all... even though this challenge is clearly intended to be funny. I just don't have it in me. So here's my challenge idea -- Gandhi. His philosophies could free a nation, but they couldn't save an individual. And here's my sketch :

Drawn in pencil, fidgeted with in photoshop. The perspective's wrong, but *shrug* that's what MAX is for. :D

The 3D begins. Many tweaks will follow. And at this rate, I may be finished with my entry before I even get to page 2! :hmm:

Ummmm, this seems vaguely familiar... ever seen UHF? Weird Al does a skit called Ghandi II. This time Ghandi is out to kick some butt. No more mister passing resistance. Then he goes into a restaurant and shoots up the place. Pretty funny stuff. So is he a villain or a hero?

dodo3d : Thanks! I don't know exactly what you mean by you can't imagine it well, but I appreciate the buttrock smileys. :D My intention right now is for the final composition to be more or less like the sketch I posted.

Capel : No... no I haven't. I honestly can't stand Weird Al, so I probably never will. I really don't belong in this challenge -- I'm not very fond of visual humour. So I'm not really turning him into a "superhero" or a villain. Just tellin' it like it is (...or modelling it like it was).

Here's a bit of an update. Head is more or less complete.

I like ur character it's coming up great
what I mean by can't imagine it well is the challange is for a funny character or helpless one and ghandi is not ....
but still good work I am keeping an eye on it

here is some comments (if u don't mind):
1-what is this?
2-big distance I think
3-I think it need alittel work cause it's kind of sharp

I hope I was helpful :wavey:

update.... I'm in the middle of texturing right now. Far from finished.

dodo3d, thanks for the critique. More is welcome! Although go easy on the texture for now, as there are quite a few things i intend to change, exaggerate or add.
I *think* I've addressed the issues you've mentioned but I'm not positive on the last two. The #1 that you mentioned was just a silly polygon from the scalp bumping out of the ear.

I just wanted to get this up before bed, so there's proof that I'm not just sitting on my ass *all* the time. Later I'll post a revision with better angles.

Ghandi saved himself, like all those who aspire to become their own masters.

I think this is a good choice, especially during of these times.

Nice likeness.

KingMob : Thanks man! I knew my whining on IRC would get me somewhere. :p About my Zim avatar, it's a 3d model I made a long time ago that I'm going to animate someday. Gotta love toonshaders.

Nahaz : Thank you much. :)

Also, a bit on why I feel Gandhi is suitable to be called "hapless" -- first of all, to be clear, the word hapless actually means unfortunate, rather than helpless. (yeah, I had to look it up :D ) And Gandhi was unfortunate in several respects.

First of all, he expected so much more than was possible from his countrymen, many of whom quickly forgot his teachings once they no longer served their immediate purpose of political freedom (Gandhi was naive of this, imho).

Second of All, because Gandhi was perceived to be so fundamental to Indian politics of the time, every success brought him greater respect while every misfortune garnered resentment from his critics. Which was ultimately a core reason for his assasination -- although he was opposed to the separation of India & Pakistan, his "consent" to it was largely resented. At least if I understand my history correctly.

*whew* Thus concludes my mini-essay for the day.

d'oh! I had meant to post an update....

I'm in the middle of texturing his hands right now. Many things need tweaking, but I want to get everything done first.

He's looking cool in a passive resistance sort of way.

The only thing I see wrong is his earlobes. They are a little too wide/stretched. otherwise he's really good.

i like the look of the cloth, but is it a little too shiny maybe? Im just thinking of the cloth that he would most likely wear. Anyway, i think your ghandi is great, its allowable to exaggerate some things, i dont think its a problem at all.
