View Full Version : Female Character Concept (large)
g8rjosh 06-03-2007, 10:31 PM So Ive been working working on this for like 30 hours. Its my first project with a tablet. (Intuos 3). I would really appreciate some critique. Anything you think will help. Thanks!
A few things I am thinking about. Long hair that's flowing away from the first as if the fire eminates some force... less face contrast on shadowing.. etc

It looks very cool! I really like the way you achieved contrast with the flame thing. Maybe a little overexposed, but it still looks awesome. Im not an expert myself, actually im trying to improve my skills, but i think some feedback is important for any artist (other than cool/not cool, of course).
I really like the fire effect you achieved. Maybe the piece would be more significant if her face wasn't in a neutral state, like staring closely to the flame, or something like that.
Also i noticed that the hair needs more support, i mean, it doesn't seem like the hairband is supporting her hair that much. Perhaps you should try to find a more efficient solution for that, like some nice ribbon that fits with her armor or something like that. Also, her neck seems a bit long, but that could be just me hehe. Anyways, its a very nice piece, i hope this helps you to improve it. Good luck with it :).

I think the flowing hair idea is great, it would give the painting more energy. It would make the magic thingy seem powerful, and with her expression of peace it would tell the viewer she is in control of it. I think it would look great.
So for some crits, her shoulder is too small and her eye seems to be looking at us and not the magic thingy. (Add a little corner of white eye part in the corner) Also the light on her right arm and shoulder is comming from behind, not infront. Be careful when using filters for special effects, it looks like you did that for the magic thingy. It always looks better when you use the same technique for the whole painting. Don't be afraid to use different colors other than white on the bright highlights. I see some yellow and purple in the magic thingy, so throw some purple in there too!
And some tips for painting hair: forget individual strands, but start by blocking out the different places that the light would hit. From there, you can slowing decrease the size of your brush until you have the hair as detailed as you want. Even if it is largly blocked colors and a few dramaticly colored strands here and there would be good.
Also, don't use white to highlight the hair as you have done, but use the same colors as the other areas in the piece, especially when you have such a dramatic colorful lightsource.
I love the idea, pose, colors and especially the face! I love her expression and the dramatic lighting.
Well done!
Hope this long write-up can help you.

Thank you so much for your tips. I will take all of them into this WIP. Here is is some further progress (minus the suggestions on here).
Just something I ran into... I want to make her stand out from the background, but the only thing I could think of was to put a slight glow around her... Any other ideas? I really like the dark esque background, but when I put the BG fire near her to give more contrast, it looked like it was too noisy. The idea is that she can harness fire, not create it, BTW.

Sorry I cannot seem to edit the original post to give warning in it. It doesnt seem to update... Anyway...
Also,
As far as proportions go, I made her first in the nude, and added armor on top of it to assure the model was proportioned correctly... It was originally based off of a photograph. I used the grid line technique to draw the figure.
