BREAKDOWN of SHOT 001
---------------------------------------------------------
Breakdown of shot 001
most background lements were painted with watercolours on paper. it took forever and i am unlikely to ever touch another paintbrush
heres the sky...i painted loads of skies trying to get the feel right....this is the one i liked the most....even though i hadnt stretched the paper correctly and it is all wobbly, i think it adds to the roughness of the rest of the production.

i did cheat a little though and increase the saturation and create an almost spotlight feel to the upper edge

in goes the tower...i painted this with recession in mind, but i didnt get it quite right

so again with the photoshoppery

since the tower was going to have CG sails slowly rotating in the gentle wind, i had to create shadows to be cast onto the tower structure. this is a simple track matte from the sail layer

and here are the CG sails....the textures were hand painted water colours though...so it isnt really cheating

house interior...this is CG but all textures are painted in water colour
the perspective doesnt match at all on this but it doesnt matter...i just needed something behind the windows of the house

so a little more photoshoppery to weather it down

pic 14 shows the addition of a fence....i ought to point out that when i am working i will often switch between 3d camera and standard view just whilst i am working on colour. this is especially useful on elements which are out of focus
pic 14
http://a645.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/33/l_d73d4052272ceaf69ec8a69db5b9c8cc.jpg
the final pic shows everything set to their correct Z depth and a final colour balance pass on the fence and it is ready to go off for final treatment

i havent uploaded shot 2 yet, but here is a breakdown
---------------------------------------------------------------
i needed a slightly different approach to the aesthetic for the interiors. but the tools are the same and if you have a basic understanding of compositing software, it will be simple enough.
i started out with a simple render of the interior. this is a CG interior with hand painted watercolur textures.
pic 1
http://a686.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/7/l_9bca40cddd5e764dfec48d969df48cfd.jpg
i then added some hot spots where the light would be hitting the ground from the lounge window....later i would discover that you cant actually see the ground and my time was wasted. excellent...
pic 2
http://a137.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/63/l_b4386fe0438b1f8685aac1c1b16fc110.jpg
then i added a CG kitchen

and it is really subtle...but in this pic you might be able to see that i have heated up the bannister....no me neither...but it is there and you dont notice it in the final aesthetic. excellent x2
pic 4
http://a517.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/49/l_06c9abbbe1263b85801a27bb4c007cb4.jpg
then i heated up the area around the door

i am really starting to dig his cape. when i export my coloured characters i also export each colour on their own to be used as track mattes. this means i can adjust the colour of his coat to be masked out for the cape without affecting any of the other elements to busta

you may or may not be able to see in the still, but i went to the effort of putting volumetric lighting beaming through the door which is actually being interacted with by the bloke

and another thing which took ages and cannot be seen is the slight red-ness to his knees and elbows...this was to suggest that he is a handy man
