View Full Version : Character: Natasha Henstridge
Elliotjnewman 03-17-2003, 12:39 PM Hi everyone, I have been working on this face for the past couple of days and would like to have some feedback in regards to the form and the proportions. The model was produced using reference pics of natasha henstridge (the alien in Species), but I have used other pics, some mix and matching I guess, plus a little artistic L. I am currently working on the collor bones, which i think still need work, as does the hair and the neck.
Comments and crits are welcome. and sorry for the bad compression, I have no web space.

Far as I can tell, the facial proportions look ok...but the ear cut-out is way too high. The ear should frame between the eye and the bottom of the nose, for correct proportioning.

I agree on that. I'm also not quite sure about here forehead though. from the first pc I got the idea that her eyebrows are a little too far to the outside, wich gives a very sharp edge on the side of her head, if u know what I mean. that looks a bit unnatural. besides that it looks great! can u show a front-view?

Yeah I agree with both of you on that. the brow is a bit too masculin still, and I didnt consider the ear holes much, I am doing the ears at the moment so I will adjust that in the stitching process. Here is the front view of the face. I have looked at the mouth and there just seems to be something about it that doesnt look quite right, any ideas?

allright, the front view gives me a much better idea 8-)
I think that if you give the face a littel more "body" the proportions will look better. The cheeks 4 example are (in the frontview that is) a little too small. that makes the face too narrow I think. I see what you mean by the mouth. the width is allright, but the lips are just a littel too think I believe. If you move the corners of the mouth a little up (just slightly) it'll look a bit better as well. I took the liberty of drawing in your picture. don't mention the sloppiness of the lines that much, I'm not that great with my graphic pen in photoshop yet....
hope it helps a little!

Here is an update with the ears added. I will update again once I have done the cheek, brow and mouth alterations. I'm using Maya complete and dont have fur so I'm not too sure how to approach the hair, I'm thinking of modelling it as shown in these images. cheers.

Just some anatomic pb as the ears which are too up, the mousse too down, the head shape not good.
Search on fineart.sk some info to get ride of those pb:wavey:

well I have made some of the changes, the ears are lower, mouth higher, cheeks out a bit more and the brow is softer. I have also added lots more faces around the forehead area to create wrinkles when I make the blend shapes for animation. I am still not too keen on the mouth area, any comments will help!

Well I have just added the mouth with the teeth, also I have added lots of geometry for wrinkle lines when I do facial expressions. This image shows the mouth open in a snarling type of fashion to show the teeth - let me know if you think it looks ok - or if you think it doesnt!
Cheers. p.s. I will update a little later and show some expressions...

any comments? here is her a little angry...

a little angry? man, she looks evil! I'd be scared if I had a GF who looked at me like that, haha. seriously though, she loks way better now. can't wait to see the texturing, especially the hair. she does have an unusual face, but I like it a lot. }-)

I like those expressions very much. Let's hope that you are a good textureartist, so this girl will come out really awesome

inverse: thanks alot, yeah she has her bitch on in that pic! I'll do a happy expression just for you!
cANT: Thanks, those expressions are still just tests, more will come! Yeah I am a texture artist, and am also a painter - so I hope I can do the textures justice! I just have to make sure I can get all the projections spot on - this is the first time I have textured a face in Maya, having done many in Lightwave before.
updates soon... working on the hair modelling at the moment!

Here is an update of the hair modelling, I dont have fur as I'm using Maya complete so I am modelling it instead, this means that I will have to go for a more stylised look - let me know what you think!
cheers, ell.

I would love to have some comments on the hair as I need to finalise it so I can start doing the blend shapes for the expressions. In thetexturing process I will add smaller, individual strands of hair. Let me know if you think this works...

of course, again another view...
would anyone be willing to post a higher res image in the finished gallery section for me when I finish? I don't have any web space...

Looks like you've come a fair ways since you started this thread-- the cheeks and nose look MUCH better than in the beginning.
I don't know what the mesh is like now, but if the first one you showed is any indication, you could REALLY benefit from having a look at the Topology Research sticky thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38469) in the modeling section, there's as many examples and links to good sources of info for head meshes as you could possibly need.
Also, this page I wrote (http://www.logrhythms.com/Leah/tuts/BHhome.html) might help you out some with getting the best use out of your reference material that you can, to really get it looking like her.
Keep at it!

Ahh, sod it. I've been messing around with building Ms Henstridge too. Oh well, back to the drawing board. And I thought she'd be obscure enough...
Your version is looking good. I like the transitioning between head and hair. Must try that sometime.

Gnarly Cranium - thanks for the input. The topolgy of this model isnt completely prefect - there are quite a few tri's and lots of poly's with more that for sides - but all of these are in sections which shouldnt matter too much. As long as I can create the right expressions for her than I will be happy, a lot of the geometry will be used to create wrinkles - damn maya is good at this! I'll post a wire of her. I'm also not too fussed about getting the model looking perfectly like Natasha, I just used her as a basic reference, and used other females for different sections such as the ears. I will chech out those links though!
sasquach - u should post ure version of her- I would be pleased to see it! yeah the hair is quite experimental, I hope the textures will work on it...

Ahhh, alright, you've got the mesh looking much better set up than it was before-- the layout of the structure is more important than invidiual ngons or tris, I think. Looks like you've got it set up pretty well-- but the funny edges going into the nose might give you some problems. I haven't done much of any animating at all though, so I can't say.
As for the hair, it will be interesting to see what happens with it-- I wouldn't think that making it a part of the head would work that well, but I guess we'll see!

I have just finished the inside of the mouth - the cheek walls and the toungue - complete with bones! I have done a quick laughing animation look on her to reveal the inside of the mouth (and the wrinkles!) but I have just noticed that the bottom line of teeth are visable and in reality they should be hidden by the toungue which should be touching the walls of the inside cheeks. So I will fix that. Any suggestions? please let me know!

Well I have stopped creating the expressions and have been working on the textures - which I will update you on... I still have to make quite a few adjustments - the area around the eyes needs to be slightly darker including the bags, the eyes arent quite right yet - and are too open (surprised looking). I have created the eye lashes with textures - what do u think? Sorry again for the bad compression - I will have to sort out web space later on...

I have been working on the lighting and the eyes here, also made quite a few minor changes to the textures... The shirt is just a stand in at the moment untill I make it look better - its also too small...
