Hello,

We have just finished our degree film, 'A Tale of Rock' and have the website up and running for it. It recently won the award for 'Best Character Animation' and 'Audience Award' at Hertfordshire University Digital Animation Film Day.

Stevo Payne animated the film.

John Godwin did all of the Modelleling, texturing, lighting, compositing, Matt backgrounds.

We are both now looking for work after completing our degree :)

Click here (http://www.tale-of-rock.com) or on the image to view the film. Hope you enjoy it! :)

This was definetly a great visual acheivment, i liked the characters, the animation, and the style very much. The One critique that I would make would be on character development. The little guy is only afraid for a second when he meets the big one and that is only because of his mass, but the big guy seems like he would be head honcho with playing the guitar as well, i mean his guitar does blow fire:twisted:.
what I'm getting at is the little dragon doesn't question himself or his abilities at all, he just jumps right in there, which is cool but it doesn't bring out the conflict and it doesn't add to the growth of the character, he never once thinks that his skills are really on the line or being tested this is just another chump to show up, but it's not another chump that rock dude is narly. He went in there to accomplish a task and he did, fairly effortlessly and the rock dude falls. Just something to think about, but what you guys did was really great:applause: and I hope you produce more in the future with that kind of quality:buttrock:

at first I thought the action in some areas felt a little too fast, but after watching it a 2nd time (slightly enlarged) i thought it was perfect!

i haven't seen music incorporated into a short like this for a while -- nice to see something in this manner so briliantly executed.

ps. way to rock the FENDER!! :buttrock:

Quite simply some of the most polished student work I've ever seen come out of a UK university. The effort you've put in really shines out.

There are one or two moments, such as the little guy doing the 'cuckoo' expression, that feel a bit jammed in but then it's a light hearted fun film, so it's not that big a deal. Having said that, the battle culminating in the 'hero' stabbing the rock guy in the head does seems a little harsh!

Really good work, you should both be proud as clouds.

Great animation. I especially love the expressions. A lot of people tend to cut corners in facial animation, but you did great. Nice work. I'm curious where that whole "Devil went down to Georgia" concept originated, or maybe I just answered my question.

I must say it was delightful. The animation and render were pulled off quite nicly (a subtle touch i LOVED was the lava glow on the rock guy's guitar that pulsed in and out in between his playing).
I loved the breath roar waves, i replayed that section 3 times it was beautiful. The end "hero pose" was well framed and I liked the little dodge reposition for the falling body, lent very well.

I do have some critique/comments though, sorry if it comes off negative, but I say them in hopes of breaking off from the "fanboy" generic posts that are just one liners of its positive things. Learning experience > mindless praise (though getting both is the best, no?)

Anyways, to start off, the scene where the rock breaks and falls, he clearly falls with his guiar strapped firmly to his back, as well as the strap being UNDER his arm...I say firmly because in the drop scene it didnt budge an inch. Then the IMMEDIATE cut after that the guitar is gone.
He falls for something like 6 seconds, and in the slide down that long path you dont even see the guitar after him. Since he fell vertically it seemed odd that not only do you not see it there, but that it doesnt impact shortly after he does. When he lands, it takes another 5 seconds for it to land...it bothered me.
Now you have him clear his head while sitting, and it woulda made more sense for the guitar to impact him right as he cleared his head, instead of the additional time of standing up, then he could stand while rubbing his head to lead into the reaction to the stage.

Next bothered me enough to scroll the video back to see if it was an error in the stream. When the rock character enters for teh first time, the third step you see (his 2nd right foot plant) which is also VERY unfortunatly the one immediatly in front of the camera, 2 things happen. First, is the camera starts shaking before the foot plants. And i'm not talking a one frame off like i noticed on teh 4th step, it starts 3 frames ahead. Unfortunatly also, the sound seems to have been keyed to the camera movement as well, because the sound starts early as well. Real shame, because it was something little but it took me out of the film so much.

Next, the gulping sound effect of the small character immediatly following this scene appears to be mistimed as well, seemed awkward.

Next, i know this may be knitpicking a bit, but the hand motions didnt really coinciede to the guitar plucks from teh audio as much as i'd have expected from this film. I say that because this film is ALL about the guitar battle, so its something you'd focus on instead of the broad movements of the character.

Lastly, I have to say, in the ending scequence with when the tambourine enters on the sound and the small character is joined by those small bobbing bits of rock, I must say I was confused as to what was happening and dont know at all why little bits of rock would be floating around the character and really made me sit up (as i was slouching back at the time) wondering what and why. Simply as a medium of getting the height for the ending guitar plant, no, doesnt make much sense because its set in a cave, there could easily have been an outcropping on the wall that the character danced up boulders elading up to that, then making the leap to the head, then continue the end scequence.

Ok thats pretty much it, i'd like to say again I really enjoyed the film as a whole, and I commend you for the job you guys did, it was alot of work, and I hope you take my criticism not as attacks to you, but as comments to hopefully let you see what I saw and that you can use to improve in the future noticing small things like that.

Cheers, great watch.

Heres a diagram of our workflow... kind of.

We both studied Digital Animation at Hertforshire University and it really was a great course. The quality of teaching is superb; the course comes highly recommended. I dont mean to be harsh but I was a bit dissapointed! Maybe because people have been praising how great the animation is and giving "5 stars". I think the modelling and lighting is not bad. However, as an animator I must say the animation is not that great. Also the overall acting and cinematagraphy is a bit messy. The animation timing is off at times also could be polished more. I dont mean to condemned you guys... In fact, I think it is a decent effort. You guys deserve praise for that. However, I am not sure how it can be frontpage material when there are so much better works in the forum which deserve getting plugged. Oh well, all the best and keep up the efforts. :)
