View Full Version : cache in Maya 8.5, Bug?

I cant work it out. I cant cache. I do not know wat is going on in the scene.

I have a simple reference model character with deformation on the geometry and am tryin to use geometry cache and/or nCache for nCloth. I turn the "play from cache" to on, and nothing happens. Ive imported the cache from nCache and geometry cache and nothing happens, but it all does is create a new node called cacheSwitch. Ive deleted re-created cloth, then created a new cache and nothing. Imported references, created a new object within the scene and applied nCloth, cache... nadda. Created a new solver, checked the trax editor, checked the xml, re-imported a cache that had previously worked, called my mum....

Ive tried everything.... Nothing seemed to work in this scene.

But if i create a new empty scene, i am able to import and create new caches etc... What is going on? Is anyone experiencing this problem?

Is there a bug? ack

It could be couple of things.
When you deleting cache swith to option on delete cache command. This will allow you to choose which cache you want to delete.
Also when you have more the one cache on the object they need to have thicked on enable in order to use them and mixed them.
Also check where the cache is pointing at. Is it pointing to the right name and right data?
Also rewind your scene to the starting frame everytime you save scene.
(this is bug, fixed in sp1 )

Heya als, thanks for the reply.

Here are the steps i took.... First I created a cache, in a new folder. 0 -300f. so...

(i) Tried deleting it, but I get.... //Error. No caches found on selected objects.

(ii) So i tried attaching existing cache from the folder. Then

(iii) Enabled all caches selected. I get ... // Enabled 0 cache(s).

(iv) In nClothShape1 i selected Play from Cache to on.

(v) I got desperate and tried differerent combinations. of the previous steps.

Nothing....

So i tried creating a plane, and adding a nCloth. I cached that, and in the hypergraph i get a cacheSwitch. I imported again, and i get another cacheSwitch. Turned it on... nothing.
Tried geometry cache... and nothing.

However, if i created a new scene, and tried cache, it works. hmmmm.

Its like under the modify>Evluate Nodes> nCloth is turned off. But it isnt. Is there a cache enable button somewhere, because i couldnt find it except for the 'Enable cache on Selected, under nCache?

Ive figured out how to cache.

I had to do a geometry cache on the deformed geometry. Open a new scene, Import the geometry to be cached with deleted history. import Geometry cache the geometry, and voila, it works.

Its like the cache option in my old scene was turned off, but i couldnt find a way to turn it on.

Does anyone know how to turn it on? Its just a little annoying for the production pipeline

if this is the case, nevertheless, 8.5 just got another thumbs up for prod. nCloth looks superb.

I think I had similar situation on one scene.
This probably happened if you saved your file without "rewinding".
Also it happened once when I had wrong timing on the scene version cache, but that's a bit long story.
On the cache file itself there is enable button. You can see it in attribute editor. This had to be on in order to consider it and mix it.
If you like you can send me the file I can take a look at it...
I don't have time to install new sp1 but that supposed to fix this bug.
There is also geometry cache and ncloth cache, but you know this...
Anyways sorry I couldn't reply earlier, but I'm glad you've sorted it out...

heya als, thanks all the same.

You pointed me in the right direction.

How do u get the sp1 file? In our production we tend to start our animation at f 100. So ill have to look at it and see what we should do.

Ill pass on sending u the file, dont want to trouble u anyways. But, can i send file or messages personally through this forum? im abit of a noob.

Currently we are doing some tests before we upgrade to 8.5, and so ill have to experiment on other issues.

sp1 is just abv for service pack 1, which you can download from AW web site, check the link:

Well, if you do, then all the starting frames should point to this number (100) then and it will be fine. You can set up this in preferences, so that everytime you open maya it starts with frame 100, and so the simulations should do the same. When I say "rewind" this means to go to the starting frame of your cache. Since I'm doing this I didn't have anymore problems.
No, but you can send me a private message if you don't want to share file with whole forum.
Probably is better to send it to support, since they might have more time to deal with it. I wouldn't mind helping myself if it is was crucial for you to save the file...

I think maya 8.5 brings lot's of improvements with MR, and nCloth is really great.
Plus there is all around interface improvements (with ongoing game of "guess where we moved this menu!?")
I think lot's of people upgraded, which I guess proves the point.
Or maybe you might wanna wait for version 9?
