View Full Version : HMC 9: Star Wars Tribute: Luke/Vader Fight
05-30-2007, 07:13 PM
Well, I won't be able to work on this much until work slows up a bit, but I'm gonna try to find some time. I'll just do the Vader/Luke fight on the catwalk in Cloud City..... or on the Death Star in front of the Emporer. Depends on how much time I have.

If time is an issue then you should go for the Cloud city scene cause there is one hand less to rig in that one....

I would encourage an Return of the Jedi fight instead of Cloud City. With it being the 30th anniversary, that battle summed up the entire idea for the prophecy. Although the scene on the catwalk is extremely important in the whole relationship between the characters, the end of the battle from Jedi has more closure and I always thought was more intense. Be pretty cool to do the scene after Palpatine had been tossed in the trash and Luke is holding Vader. That would be a good tribute I think. :)

I was kinda looking to do more of an action scene this time cuz I did a more romatic pose last time with Conan. But your idea of Luke holding Vader is a good one.
The catwalk fight has a certain feel about it. It's isolated in a vast internal chamber. And with the atmospheric setting it gives you a feeling of loneliness and desperation which I really feel is key to the scene.
The Death Star fight has great contrast though with all the lights and glossy finishes. It would be cool to have them fighting in front of the core chamber too with the glowing shaft.
But I can wait a while to decide which route to go. Once Vader is modeled, I'll have to decide because Luke's clothes change between those scenes.

I hear ya. They both have very different feels to them. Luke's clothes are very different and he has much more gear on in Empire. The scene as a whole would be far less complex on the catwalk than in the death star, so long as you did a backplate for the catwalk instead of modeling. If you modeled the whole background of the chasm, then you might have some serious time on your hands getting in enough detail to make it look right. That's why this is hardcore though right?

Not much of an update, cuz I haven't had much time to work on it. But here's the start of Vader.
06-16-2007, 04:07 PM
The going is slow these days. But here's what I have so far on Vader's head. Need to add a bit more detail.

Looking good so far
Looking good, though I belive the proportions are a bit off... :/

Vader's Saber... Modeled in LW and brought into ZBrush for some quick materials to view it.
06-17-2007, 09:57 PM
Not sure how much more you were planning on doing to Vader's Sabre, but if you're done, I suggest you check out the RebelScum site for the EpisodeV sabre (that is if you're still doing the Bespin scene) or the EpisodeVI sabre for the Death Star scene. Lot of stuff you need to add and adjust, even though it will be wrapped up in his hand.

That one makes about the fifth variation of it I've seen. I just want to get a good rendition of the saber without getting too hung up in the details since I still have the rest of Vader and Luke to model.

There are different versions for each episode. The RTJ one was the first Vader one they made a toy out of. The ESB one has always been my favorite. The variations apply to pretty much every sabre in every movie. The idea being that they continually modified them or rebuilt them after being lost (i.e. getting their hand cut off which is it only me or did Lucas have some fetish with hands being chopped off in episodeIII?) such as Obi-Wan lost his in Phantom and rebuilt it in Clones then a new one after being confiscated on Geonosis for Revenge and then aged and modified in ANH. Luke aquiring Anakin's in ANH then modifying before ESB then lost on Bespin (which was actually recovered by Vader in backstories). Kind of crazy, but there are ridiculous variations.

But I hear ya.... don't wanna get too caught up in it, but it might be something worth coming back to.

I may need to revise my title to be just "Vader" cuz of how much time is left and how slow things are going, but we'll see how things go.
Here's some other props to go with Vader. The groin protection needs a bit more cleaning up. I'm still working on his gloves, body and robes. Also messed with the black materials a bit more.
Looking good, keep it up, man. Which HDR map do you use, by the way? I almost always use the kitchen probe one, but I really look the look of yours.
06-30-2007, 02:54 AM
WOW:bounce: that is amazing work!
06-30-2007, 03:19 AM
This wasn't actually an HDRI probe. It was a ZBrush 3 material using the image below(modified to be black) as a material capture. I found that image on Google. I also combined it with another material within ZBrush 3 to get the material shown.
That's one reason I'm keeping this project rendered in ZB3 - to see just how far ZB3's new material system can go!

Small update for the gloves.
06-30-2007, 08:54 PM
Great update man! I might be wrong but I don't think the chain goes all the way around the neck. I think it's just clasped to the corners of his cape. Love the gloves!
07-02-2007, 02:06 PM
impressve ... most impressive!
07-03-2007, 02:19 PM
You're right Firebert. Once I get the cape on properly, I'll delete the polys that aren't needed.
Also, what do you think? The last render of just his bust.... I'm thinking that would make a good cookie jar!!
07-03-2007, 05:11 PM
Pretty nice so far, the globes look Sooooo cool :) keep it up! hope you get time to model the whole vader at least. Looking foward to see what you get to do before the deadline, I really like what you've got till now.

Last update as this is the final model.
All rendering were done in ZB cuz I was curious about how well the new Matcap materials would work.
In the end, all I could muster is a few nights work and fell way short of my initial idea of doing both Vader and Luke.
Oh well, maybe next one I can find more time! This was fun!

Thats the coolest turntable I think I've seen.
Spectacular and a congrats on a job well done!

What I like about this is the amount of detail, that and the cool kinda toy look of the final render.. Very nice work.

what he said =D veery cool it looks awesome... are you still thinking of doing Luke at some later time?
07-10-2007, 02:16 PM
Yeah, I was a bit dissappointed that I couldn't find time to finish the whole concept. I really want to finish it. Maybe in the next few weeks/months I'll find time to work on Luke and the Bespin catwalk to follow through with the scene.
07-11-2007, 10:27 AM
The cape looks abit odd. The glow could be more controlled. Do finish up luke
