fastest way would be to drop in a skylight, turn on Light Tracer under Advanced Lighting, and then put in a Directional light as the sun. Well, I think Max 9 has some nifty new sunlight stuff, but if you're max 8 or lower, this should be fine. Tweak the multipliers of both, though. Its a decent starting point.

This page is not for max in special, but it covers lighting in general. It's definately worth a look:

other links found by searching the web:

I also recommend reading the book "Digital Lighting and Rendering" by Jeremy Birn which covers the main lighting techniques, shadows and textures. A good point is that it's not application specific and therefore all techniques can be used on every 3d package. Have a look for the 2nd, overworked edition.
