hi guys, i don't know if this is the right place for this question, but how do you add the image to your post? I know it's probably a stupid question, but using the "attach file" i can't upload a large file...max 96kb...

thanks!

Hey guys,

Please only upload your final entry to this thread, no need to post wip, your individual threads will show this.

Try to keep images linked into this thread at a reasonable size, around 1024 in width, for high res i'd recommend posting a seperate link for viewing.

bechira any chance you can crop your image down to the above recommendations? :)

Regarding posting images, personally i use a dedicated server but other people use websites such as flickr.com i think which support hot linking. Could be wrong. Maybe someone else could recommend an alternative?

Please feel free to ask any questions.

- Dave.

Actually alt the above, 1400px width seems a good size looking at the above.

Might also be good to post a link to your individual threads too.

- Dave.

Ok no problem, I will post only the step3 final work, but I thought that step1 and step2 is also judged by the jury. Seems that I was wrong of course. :D

everlite
05-30-2007, 07:29 PM
No, wip wont be judged, they're just requirements of the brief. The final judgement will be based on the final matte painting only with focus on a set list of criterias such as use of composition, creative direction, ability to interperate the brief, realism etc ...

Cheers - Dave :)

Well, here's my final entry. I've tried my best to color correct this. Still not sure what the deal is with that but I /think/ this should look okay. Also, I've included rain in the pic, ( I can provide a rainless one if the judges would prefer ) because I probably wont get to do the animation. Anyway, thanks for looking. Good luck everyone, these entries all look excellent!

Hey there going to try my best to expain this.....I used photobucket to upload my image , when u upload ur image in photobucket it will generate a URL for u ....then when u open the post reply function here in CGsociety in the message dialogue box where u type ,there r symbols on top which show u the font size n other options...one is the inset image icon its a little yellow square with two mountians..k ..so click on that n a small box will pop up asking for the url copy the url from photobucket n paste it in the box here ....and ur done :D
do hope u understood.

Hey guys;

Here is my final entry (or at least final until I do the touch-ups early this morning).

http://www.richardrosenman.com/storage/cgtalk_matte_painting.jpg

My submission is a photo composite matte painting - there is virtually no painting involved. Rather, every element has been individually selected, distorted, color-corrected, and treated from about 150 different photographs.

If this goes against the rules of the challenge, please remove.

**EDIT** Full WIP progression page now available in the following thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=4435256

everlite
07-10-2007, 02:48 PM
Hold your breath for just a little longer :)

Originally at the beginning of June i was in touch with a few Matte painters who in good will were very enthusiastic about helping judge the contest, however since then it kind of went a little pair shaped, for good reasons i'm sure, they were unable to find time or simply didn't get back to me.

However, in the last two weeks a new plan has been set in motion between myself and Leigh (CGtalk mod) which has resulted in a few great judges getting on board :) and this is, as i write coming to a conclusion with a final winner.

So please forgive the absense, it's been a little frustrating from my end :) but fingers crossed this time next week we should have a winner.

Thanks to everyone for been patient.

I'd put these three in the top finishers. Ryan Quakenbush, Marco Bauriedel and Bence Kresz.

I like the mood of the piece.

Soz if I spelt names wrong.

I would have to make a very hard decision to choose between SamsonsReaper, Keating and kbarts.

With all due respect to all of who participate on this challenge, I think SamsonsReaper would be the winner.

I like MarkyG too, Kbarts... I don´t know, there´re very cool mattes over here, hehe.

I wish you good luck again, "mattes" !:D

VERY interesting :)

If i may, personally (and this really is MY personal unprofessional opinion) :)

I think the following stand out above the rest:

1. Inlakechh

2. Marky G

3. Samsons Reaper

4. Keating

5. Bechira

Again this is only my opinion and bares no connection to the official results. :)

A few hours left, watch this space :)

Dave, what happened to your version of the NHM Matte ?

The real world, that's what happened :) working 24/7. I still wouldn't mind digging it out some day, i was going to give it a nice cam projection. One moment, i'll dig it out and post it up...

Looking through my wip folder i've lost the original psd, bugger :( Though i found a quicktime pan that i did, not too cracking but worthy :)

http://www.capturefx.co.uk/web/nhm_wip1.mov (right click save target as, 7.5mb)

Well, i know who the winner is now :) :) :) i'll compile it all into a nice little post for ya, give me a few hours.

Lots of nice mattes here.
Here’s my list:

1. SamsonsReaper (most convincing matte painting)
2. Keating (nice mood and photo element detail)
3. MarkyG (idea and mood)

Good luck all.

Oh my goodness I wasn’t expecting this! Fantastic!! I’m really honored -especially being amongst such superb entries.

Thanks to everyone for their great comments and critiques and helping me as I worked on this challenge.

That plate cleaning part alone was a real eye-opener!

Everyone’s images were winners. They’re so inspirational it keeps one going even when the day has been long.

I really enjoy what the judges had to say here. They make great points in their critical feedback. This is why I enjoy this site so much in that you can really learn from those around you and thus grow and put more into the “next piece”.

Wow this really made my day. Thanks again for such a great challenge and here’s to the next one! See you there.

Howdy guys,

I've received a few emails over the last 12 hours from people requesting personal feedback from the judges, in most cases they only provided feedback for either the first place winner or in a few cases the first and second places. However, through my own 'numpsy' lack of attention one judges did provide feeback for a third entry and even though there was no third place i feel it's only fare to post their critique. So unofficially you could say that third place goes to:

Sorin Bechira

pros:
nicely framed composition, viewer "stays" in the picture,
original idea to place a grave yard in the middle, destroyed building in the background works well.
interesting ambience and subtle choice of colors.

contras:
overall, very blurry feel. The foreground elements could have been worked out better, with different levels of detail and depth following the perspective.
Compositionwise a lot of space is "wasted" in the dark on the left and right side. Additionally it feels very symetrically framed.
The lighting of the midground structure, doesn't match the lighting of the background structure on the left.
Lots of elements feel very "painted", due to the blurryness and uniform distribution of details, while lacking some subtle color and value variation.

overall:
Nice piece to look at - the "dead" feeling goes very well with the topic of an aged building.

Apologies to Sorin. And to everyone else, that's everything folks :)

Congrats to the winner and runners up, and to all the participants for making it a really great contest! Watching everyones work evolve and the quality of the entries was fantastic, and I learned a lot from that even though I myself didnt compete this time.
Im looking forward to the next challenge, coz after how good this one was, I will be eagerly awaiting round 2 :)

I have to say, I was a little worried that this would never get judged, which would have been one of the major atrocities of the century, but now that its all wrapped up im just looking forward to what will happen in the next challenge!
