Title: As time goes by...Pripyat at Chernobyl, Michael Betke
Name: Michael Betke
Country: Germany
Software: 3ds max, finalRender, Photoshop

This image is inspired by an old Sport-Center near Chernobyl.
I started it as a realtime Game-Engine scene but expanded it to CG.
Textures are from CG-Textures.com and I used the Ivy-Generator tool.

I like the piece a lot, the dark atmosphere gives it a feeling of disaster and memories, anyway there are some pieces of the work that doesn't like me as much as the others, like the ones that are suspended from the ceiling of the top that are the same one that is on the left part of the swimming pool. I guess there are towers or something like that but I don't like the way that ended up in the end.

Letting aside that, the piece is beautiul in my opinion :)

Very nice, amazing textures, perfect lighting.

I like the black and white as well, it really works for this image.

Thanks guys. :)
The grey thingies are some fallen down isolation mats. i didnt want to place them all over the scene. but yes two of them are really looking the same only rotated. too bad i stared at the scene for hours but didnt notice hehe.

I made a close-up render too.
You can click the shot. It was a hard decision which render looks better for the gallery here.

These are two really great images.

I woudl suggest the main one could be improved in two ways: 1) remove the white halo around the handrail to the dive board and round the window frames. I presume this has come from an alpha channel being applied to a render and a background being put in in photoshop? If it is you can romove the white by using the tools in the "Layer" menus, and the bottom option "Matting". If you had a fairly white background in the original render you can apply the alpha channel so that the layer has transparency (not a layer mask) then use "remove white Matte". Then you can use "Defringe" and it will completely remove the white fringing. It might be that "Defringe" will do the job on it's own.

I also think the both images suffer from the depth of field blurring. It is far too much and makes the modells look very small, even minature. If you reduse the depth of field blurring significantly you will get better images.

I'd really like to see them after you make alterations.

Best of luck

@LQ2:
Thanks for your feedback. It was indeed a little bit tricky with ther alphamask. In the close-up render it was easier to get rid of this halo. Thanks for your little tutorial. Its very easy if you know how. :)
Some people will find it to blurry but my intention was to draw the attention onto the ivy-parts to show that nature takes back from man what he had build. So the blurry is painted with photoshop and no "real" DoF camera solution.

@haimengte:
I dont know if you saw this picture before. Maybe my reference photo where its based on. or the WIP thread in the 3D forums here at cgtalk.

I like the blurry and light blown look of it. I've also seen pictures of buildings in Chernobyl, though not this particular one, but it fits what I've seen very nicely. I also want to thank you for btinging my attention to the ivy generator. I've wanted a tool like that for years.
