View Full Version : AE - Speed lines.
Peace455 03-17-2003, 03:57 AM Hello All,
I would like to create the effect of speed lines but I'm not too sure how to create it. I have a character that moves very quickly and to help visualize it, I wanted to add some speed lines to him, and I also have a couple of scenes with people falling and I wanted to create some speed lines in the background.
I figured that AE could produce the effects, I know a decent amount of After effects but unforutnately not enough to produce this effect.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know how I can creat it, using AE or anyother program.
thanks

What, exactly, are speed lines?

Hi,
I don't quiet understood what you mean, but I think that you are talking about motion blur, that effect that happens when you capture moving elements in a low aperture time.
Well for this you can use the AE Motion Blur, or some plugins that do that (like twixtor), you can also try to use directional blur, but the results aren't the same, best option still motion blur.
Check the AE help files for how to activate and use Motion Blur.
I hope that helps,
See Ya!

I think you don't mean this normal motionblur. Speedlines are those cartoon stylish motionblur elements. Like lines tracing the movement. Don't know anyway how to do this in ae, sorry. I would do those in 3d Max.

Larson, is right.
Sorry for not explaining it better. Speedlines are mainly seen in anime, but I've seen one animation do it very well ( Tom Cat if anyone has seen it).
the effect is baisically lines speed from the foreground into the background. Here is an image of the effect.
LarsSon: How would you create that effect in max? I use. . or should say I used to use max, and am still very familioar with it, but wouldn't have though to use max. How would you go about creating it in max?
here is the image:

the white lines in the background.
thanks again.

if you read comic books, it's when there's an action shot and people don't wanna show the background again. in anime you see it all the time when they're trying to distract you from what's basically a still image, like of a guy punching you. they look dope hto.

I didn't get your images. But your idea is so interesting, that i'm trying to find some easy way to do those speedlines in ae or max. Allready have some weird idea how to do it, but i tell my results today, if i'm lucky.
In max i would convert my motion trajectories to lines and make some shapes to follow them. Like getting real speedlines. But it could be to realistic motionbath to look good.
I'll be back...

Im trying to produce the same effect...I was thinking about painting the lines in Combustion, however I just tried and it was way too tedious. I use the computer to animate so I dont have to animate by hand.
Someone should definately write a plugin for this effect. Seems like it would be pretty simple to achieve...

But since Afx 6 and 6.5 canīt use PS filters anymore you will have to render your movie as an image seq.
Then use the batch command in PS on the folder your rendered your seq to.
If you use Afx 5.5 or erlier, just put the PS wind plug in in the Afx plugin folder.
just saw that the post was 2 years old...
Sorry my English.
The link of the images is not available, so I will tell you a way to do that effect; starting from what I understand that you are trying to do.
I believe that you can create some lines in photoshop or use solids of differents sizes, later in after effects give to those lines gaussian blur. After that, animate the lines in reverse of the direction of movement of the character. Then use expressions to create a loop of that animation.
Good Luck

yeah, it sounds like super_dios is right on. I would think that would be fast.
Make one new comp, insert a white solid, shrink it to taste, move it hella fast across a few keyframes w/M.blur, then just place the comp at different locations of the moving guy.
Or
Make a new comp, insert a solid, leave it big, put 3d stroke(trapcode plugin) onto it (very tiny stroke) and edit it so that it movs quickly across.
