It's a follow up film but I think it's done in a way where anyone can basically see it for the first time and understand what's happening.

The cellshading looks WAY better in this film as opposed to the first one. Hopefully the have good characters to go with the better rendering.

Hello,

I didn't like so much the first one in 3D. But this one looks cool. Anybody has a direct download link?

Wow, produced by John Woo.

Only non-credits text in the trailer:

"3 years after 'Appleseed'..."
"MACHINA awakens."

The text on the right side reads:

"The fighting gene chooses love."

If you're right (and I hope you are) then it's about damn time!

Loved the first one and I'm really looking forward to this as well. I was pretty happy with the old cel shading except when it came to facial animation but this new style looks pretty sick.

Appears to be Digital Frontier (http://df1.dfx.co.jp/). Same guys who did the first one, which seems to have been done largely in XSI (http://www.softimage.jp/user_case/appleseed/index.html).

I'm suprised they got a budget for a second one. The first was trashed by the critics. Link (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10004834-appleseed/). Personally, I thought the first one was decent. *shrug*

The action scenes in the first one was anything but boring IMO and that's what I watched it for. I hope this one will be more hectic than the first one.

17%!? Out of curiosity, I looked up The Polar Express at it was at 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. But I don't think Appleseed's target audience is anywhere near mainstream American critics.

But I don't think Appleseed's target audience is anywhere near mainstream American critics.Looks like it, it's got 65% from the rottentomatoes users, that's quite a big difference from the critics.

I'm not sure if I wholeheartedly agree with that per say. There are quite a few well reviewed Appleseed esque movies from American critics.
What about Ghost in the Shell (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ghost_in_the_shell/)?
or Paprika (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/paprika/)?
or even Cowboy Bebop (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/cowboy_bebop_the_movie/)?
I think you might be making excuses for a convulted mish mashed script. Some of the action was entertaining however.

I really liked the first one, and I'm glad that more mature CG films are being produced. I love the talking animals, toys, cars and rats just as much as the next guy, but this speaks more to my interests.

I'm not making excuses for anything. I never said Appleseed should get an Oscar but 17 out of 100% is a movie you should regret ever seeing. A movie that pulls off a new visual style successfully (I don't know of any fully cel shaded feature films that came before it) should do better unless the plot makes you want to hang yourself.

Appleseed had the bone standard, confusing and not-very-good plot thats a staple of your average anime film (Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop are pretty mainstream and exceptionally good animes films; they are not the norm). No one familar with anime (like most people who'd go see it) should've been surprised there.

I don't think any but the hardest-core otaku or most oblivious film critic saw it expecting a deep and moving story. They saw it for cool action and great style, both of which Appleseed delivered. Most film critics likely saw it because they had to.

I'm basically saying it was a niche movie.

Just wanted to say, I agree.

This part 2 definitely looks entertaining -- cant wait for a dvd release...

(imo). xsi has nice cel shading, anybody know if the same shaders can run in MR in maya?

gunslingerblack
06-01-2007, 12:47 AM
im sure you could devise something, but if your gonna go that far why not just buy a few licenses of xsi and render there. the look seems more npr shading with toon lines on it more than straight up cell shading. we'll have to see, hopefully some more special features come out on the web for this one.

P_T

Maya has special cell shading tools right? Besides, cell shading isn't hard to achieve even without an NPR shader, specially if you're used to rendering in layers though it might take longer to set up. Use basic Lambert shader and crank up the ambient channel, render the outline from Maya toon tools and an AO pass and comp in PS.

I agree with switchblade, I don't think Appleseed deserved a 17% score. Sure the plot wasn't great but it wasn't horrible either and the action scenes alone were enough to bump it up to at least to around 40% plus the great visual style and design, it should be around 60%. Just my 5 cents.

That's the flaw with RottenTomatoes--it's either plus or minus without an inbetween. Even the "rotten" reviews point out its plus points, but in the end they're all counted as 0%. It's also impossible to compare ratings on RT as some films are rated by more/different reviewers.

That said, I didn't think it was great but the action sequences were inspired and I have to wonder how much of the clunky dialogue is down to translation.

true that, but thier toon lines look much better than i've seen maya's toon tools generate, it almost looks like the outlines are vector based

would be worth looking into just to see that maya can achieve the same results.

Well I've never actually tried using it for animation and I don't know what XSI MR toon shader can produce but I made this a while ago with Maya and PS. I supposed I could replace that soft shadow pass with a hard edge coloured shadow but I wanted to give it a pencil shaded look. Sorry for the old example, it's the only time I played around with cell shading.

You can see a shot of Appleseed 1's toon shader network here:

http://www.softimage.jp/user_case/appleseed/img/appleseed_xsi_7_l.jpg

In the interview, it says they primarily chose XSI because of its strength in toon shading. Although, given what they list as its particular strengths (being able to differentiate line thickness based on distance from camera, not have lines jutting up against other characters, being able to turn lines off on a per-shot basis), I don't see anything that, to my knowledge, can't be done in other toon systems.

It's also worth noting that Maya and Max don't have nearly as big an install base outside of English-speaking countries. In Japan, it's primarily XSI, Shade, and Maya/Max/LW in 3rd place. At least, this is what I've gathered from talking to people and reading articles about it.

that is a pretty old version of softimage too.. looks like 3.5. so at the time i think xsi had the better set of tools to do this. this is opinion only

Very true. So I guess we'll see! But given all the assets and experience they had from the first movie, it's pretty unlikely they're going to shift to another package, IMO.

yenvalmar

having used both maya toon and XSI in production, you absolutely can get similar results in maya, but its a lot easier to set up in XSI. given the length of a feature film though the time spent to develop toon shaders isnt going to be that significant either way. whatever works..

No it's not. There is an average rating at the top right out of ten that has to be submitted by the registered critics along with their fresh or rotten tomatoe. I've been a part of the forums for years and very few of the cinefiles go by the tomatoe meter. Appleseed got a 4.2/10 for instance. Regardless, as I said before, I actually liked the movie for the most part.

I see this preview, I see a yellow landmate rip off a plate of it's armor and throw it, and I cannot help but think, are we going to see the MUCH better plot from the original anime of Appleseed? Will we see Sebastion make a return? DOWN WITH OLYMPUS!

Sorry... I thought the 3D movie had interesting action but the story was a hell of a lot weaker than the anime original. One of the translated lines leads me to thinking "I wish I could escape my guilded cage."
