rusted_nut 03-17-2003, 01:44 AM Hi All,
I just put up a website to exhibit my 3D skills. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Please note: If you are offended by babies that swear, drink beer and beat each other up, you might not want to screen my work.

Hey there, nice work indeed.
Cool website, the figure drawings are stunning.
What kind of software did you use for "Body Rhythm?"

Hey there,
thanks mister Alien!
BODyRHyTHM was traditionally animated (remember the pencil on paper stuff), though it was edited on AfterEffects and then digitally scanned onto 35mm motion picture film.
Another email I got asked if the 3D dance sequences in my UR music video were motion captured - they were not, they were 100% key framed.
Now that I got that off my chest, I hope you enjoy your visit to our planet.
Cheers

Rusted Nut,
I like your work and see your animations leaning more towards motion film and realism rather than being a 'Pixar' type of animator that exaggerates and really portrays emotions through a model.
Here is my critique for you pertaining to Raging Baby:
Excerpt 01
At the end when the baby says "I'm your brother", his wrist seems crooked and out of place. Good camera cuts.
Excerpt 02
The baby stands on top of the object. Overall timing is well done.
During a silent step, I heard the sound being a bit too loud for the step. Keep in mind that when the baby talks to the woman and points at her, his eyes are not directed at her at all. What is the reason behind this?
The compositing is very well done to blend in with the film. The film appears to repeat it's frames at times.
Excerpt 03
Babies fighting. The one baby hits the other baby once, and then knocks him out. Both times he does not look at the opponent when punching, making this not real. When 2 boxers fight in real life, they usually look where they punch. The fall of the other baby is excellent and realistic!
Excerpt 04
Good.
Excerpt 05
Animation and thought process, movement etc.. is done well. The one baby says "Captive like this.." and then does a rotation with his hips. That is innovative and interesting however, before that.. the movement does not appeal to me.. it seemed too much for my eye, and I did not understand it easily. Perhaps it's me, but when the baby walks, it seems too stiff and feet land soft. Maybe it is the size of the feet that make this effect not seem real.
Here is my critique for you pertaining to You Are:
Amazing animation leaning towards motion capture. I am not surprised if people ask wether this piece includes motion capture. Amazing!
I must say that I did not like excerpt#3 at all. The lipsync is very poor. Outside of the mouth does not seem to move as it should in real life. Cheeks can be moved a bit more, and the mouth can be expressed more openly during her singing.
Interesting idea for changing colors and adding some 2d effect to it. That Tim Huesken character must be one heck of an Illustrator!
Hope this helps you improve, and I'll see you in class.

Quite a creative work on this, very funny.
Some of the subtle movements and gestures really add to the humor especially that latest clip.

hey folks,
thanks for the feed back!
yeah, the lip sync on UR is challenged due to the morph targets (which were done in LightWave, same concept as blend shapes in Maya) - the problem there was I didn't morph the whole face, only the lips - I also learned your morph/blend targets should exceed past the furthest point you might need - the targets I made for that rig were not exaggerated enough
regarding RB's eyes, I definitly agree that the eariler animations of the baby didn't deal too much with the animation of the eyes - which are a very important element. You'll notice in the retirement scene that the eyes are now being dealt with, I found using quick linear 1 to 2 frame jumps in eye movements looked good, I also wrote expressions that drove the eye lips in relation to the eye movement
