View Full Version : hdr/exr brighter in photoshop?
mahmoudcg 05-27-2007, 04:23 PM hello
I'm saving 32 bit exr images from 3d render and opening them in photoshop to find them brighter than the render. why is this happening and how can I work with the same colors I rendered?

The first thing that comes to mind is the image's gamma. Photoshop's default gamma setting for the image probably doesn't match the 3d program's. If you just have one image to fix, try adjusting the gamma with Image > Adjustments > Exposure.

hi I karth, thanks for your reply, yes I see I can adjust gamma and exposure but what I mean is to get the same image without reworking the gamma so that I work in 3d and see the result I will get in photoshop
I found in this thread http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=14&t=235717&highlight=hdr+light
that I can turn on view> proof setup> windows/mac RGB to get the same gamma in photoshop but when I do this and convert back to 8 bits per pixels using default gamma and exposure I get the brighter image again. anyway to work around this?

If I understand what you are saying, you want to adjust the output of your 3D program, not necessarily Photoshop. From your description, it sounds like your program is outputting the image at a different gamma than it displayed.
I guess that I'd have to know what 3d software? How are you outputting it?

I'm using 3ds max 9
I do it by saving the rendered image as 32 bit .exr file
yes you are correct, I tried aafter effects and it opens lighter too it must be 3ds max gamma settings. but this doesn't happen in normal 8 bit images why does it only happen when saving 16 or 32 bits/pixel?
