View Full Version : HMC #9: Star Wars vs. Starcraft

Hi everyone =) This will be my first hardcore modeling challenge so I'm not sure if this is allowable... I was thinking of doing the opening space battle in Episode III but with a slight twist... as Starcraft II has just been announced I wanted to do a slight tribute to them as well (having been an avid player back in the day >_<)... the idea is this: while the Republic and the Separtist are completely engaged in the Clone Wars, news arrive of an invading fleet from a distant galaxy (Starcraft ships), forcing them to join forces to fight off this new common enemy
so the scene will still be the battle setting in Eps III but this time you have Star Wars ships on one side, and Starcraft ships on the other =) Its probably quite ambitious but I really wanted a challenge and I have another project going on that's mostly organic modelling so I really wanted to make this one strictly hardsurface while still being hardcore... so a space battle was the perfect idea =) anyway i'm reeally excited about doing this scene but if it isn't allowed, then I'll just do the opening space battle scene as it is in the movie, which will be fun too =)

That sounds like a great idea and will involve a ton of modelling. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.
I'm suprised no one has done the old star destroyer duking it out with the USS enterprise from Star Trek.

whew okies got a bit caught up in something else but now I'm ready to go! Better make up for lost time =)
Here's WIP for the first ship, the ARC-170 (I loved the x-wing book series and actually modelled the xwing in my very first 3d class, so making the ARC-170 first was just natural heheh)

I'm hoping to detail the body and finish detailing the wings tomorrow. I might leave the interior for the end after I finish all the ships, just in case time runs short =)

so this is probably going to seem like a small update, but I actually changed a lot of things. I found a better reference for the engine and realized some of the parts were off so they were remodelled. Also finished fleshing out the body, added the artoo unit, and the rear gun. Does anyone know where I could get better images of the guns (back and forward)? Most of this time I've spent trying to find a picture where I get a better view of them but no luck yet =(

I also noticed that the engines are a bit big for the body... or at least the nose of the ship is too short so I'll have to fix that. One more day on this and I haaave to move on!

Lookin really good so far, I thought about doing this ship too, I really wish they had featured it more in episode 3, it's such a cool design.

okies update on the guns =)
now I just have to fix the underbody of the ship, clean up the mesh, duplicate and fix seams, and then I think I can put this one aside for now

you have done a great job, but i think you must finish your model before doing an other, must do all the maps of the texture no, imagine you can't finish all the texture because you have made so much ship...

thanks lopium =) I'm actually not intending to texture any of these... at least not for this challenge... its a hardcore modeling challenge and I'm just taking that as it is

WyattHarris, starcraft part is coming after I finish this ship, which is hopefully soon =) I'm taking the day off though to work on some other projects, but maybe updates tmw
Thanks for the comment, Mai. I personally think you're INSANE for wanting to make the whole epic scene with all the ships, but hey...you've build two already, so what's there to stop you from completing another 50 or so :)
Can't wait for you to model a Protoss Carrier ship....easily one of my favourite space vehicles of all time!

aw thanks everyone =) its easy to lose steam on projects sometimes but all your comments are really helping me stay motivated :scream:
Yav, it sure does seem insane now that I'm working on it! when I had the idea originally it just seemed so cool and fun to do I couldn't help it heheh =) Just gotta keep at it... I still have 27 days right? heheh
and carriers are coming up, one of my favs too =) altho I'll probably make an Interceptor first, to take a break after this star destroyer O_O

small update =) I started doing the panels that's all across the hull but maya crashed on me... it's alright though it wasn't really working the way I wanted it to anyways. I'll have another go at it later

Excellent! Thats ALOT of work! Brings the true meaning to "Hardcore Modeling" IMHO.

okies some very late updates >.< something came up and I didn't do any modelling for a few days, except on and off a bit here and there... finally sat down today and got a bit more done =)
and overall how its looking... occlussion pass is starting to get too expensive for just these progress shots, but I'll do one once the whole back is finished and its more interesting to look at =)

okies the back is more or less finished... as I was rendering I saw a few things here and there I wanna fix but for the most part this is it... excuse the low quality but I was tryin to get these rendered quicker >_< some of the finer details got lost but I guess in the final render they're not gonna be too visible either

thanks simjoy =) yea I'm def worried too... couple things came up I wasn't expecting (doesn't it always happen that way heheh)... just got done moving most of my stuff today and got my comp set up so hopefully I can spend the next couple of days modelling... who needs to unpack right away right? =D If nothing else though I can def finish this ship and build the base/scene for it so I'd have the Venator-class star destroyer with its fleet of ARC-170 to submit =)

thanks everyone =) had to take some time off modeling to update my website (new city, new job and all that) and unpack and clean and such but hopefully can get some time in today... i have some updates but would rather save the rendering for when there's a bit more to look at =)
cat-mad I'm using Maya entirely for this challenge, although I just got my hands on Maxwell renderer to play with =D Trying to refrain from it though until after this competition ends so I can devote all the time I do have to modeling. I blame this temptation on Yav and his super nice renders using maxwell grrr hehehe

okies time for some fire power! Here's the DBY-827 heavy dual turbolaser turret. Ref for these were impossiiible to find but here's what I came up with:

octopus, i'm defintely intending to model the starcraft stuff... i already drew out some rough storyboards for the animation i'm eventually going to do with this once i'm done =) hopefully i can keep up the motivation without all of u guys there to encourage me tho!

You'll be OK with the uv mapping...just attach the parts in a logical manner and plane map everything :) Texturing will be a challenge though...all the wheathering, scratches, paint peel, bump, diffuse, material masks, etc. If you get it done though...what a major addition to your portfolio, that would be.

dj heheh yeea its getting up there... altho I was being very meticulous in the cleanup for this one as I modelled (which doubled the time it took to model any one thing but worth it when it came time for rendering) so there are almost no extra hidden faces, etc.... i made an airship based on a spanish galleon when I was still in school and thaaat one was murder to render cause I didn't know how to properly clean files and such yet >_< you guys can check it out if you want =) http://3dmai.com/windsnocturne.html

i wouldn't even know how to start modeling with that much detail. i have always sucked at hard surface modeling, so if i ever need some done, i am coming to you for it. outstanding work!

Your project must be like trying to put together a 100,000 piece puzzle in your spare time with less then a month to do it in. I honesty am just blown away with how much work has gone into this project. It would seem as though you have a team of 5 on the project or something...LOL.
I can't even imagine what the wires would look like for this... I'm looking VERY forward to seeing them.
Maybe we should have a hardcore unwrap/texturing/painting challenge after this :grin:

wasted some time today doing a couple of failed experiments so gave those up for now (just not worth it with deadline approaching)... got back to modeling and finished the star destroyer. I'm setting up renders right now so should be updated soon =)

How on earth is anybody going to judge this contest. I mean c'mon... we have a freakin destroyer here! With the usually bump mapped/displaced details modeled...
Not to mention the crazy awesome models and entrees its up against! I mean, I have about 6 different people I want to shoot my vote too...
Never would I have thought this contest would get THIS Hardcore!

here we are guys! at the end =) Its been one crazy month and a half. My original idea was obviously too ambitious for this time frame but I'm still happy with what I got done. Star Wars wiiiill battle Starcraft though so stay tuned! I might start up a WIP thread on CGSociety somewhere but it'll def. be on my website for anyone interested =)
A BIG thanks to everyone who commented on my thread and gave me the motivation to keep going, even on those long nights when you're sooo tired and you wonder why the heck you've done this to yourself! There are so many awesome entries in this compeitition its been a lot of fun following along and seeing people's work progress. Good luck to everyone! :thumbsup:

thanks red =) I had always intended to make it a base of the planet Coruscant but didn't leave enough time at the end to make it look good... oh well at least its there =)
maya still crashes every time I try to do a wireframe render through Maya Vector so here's the best I can do with a tweaked screen capture... most of the lines are so close to each other that they just become big blobs heheh... Will post renders of closer ups in a bit =)

take a screenshot of the UV's
change the color if you want the wireframe to be a specific color. Then re-apply this texture to the model using a layered texture node. put the original color on top with 100% opacity and blend mode none

first: what was the final polycount for the start Destroyer?
second: did you greeble that whole thinga poly at a time or is there some script that you used? if so could you point me in the right direction?
I know there used to be a cheap little plugin for 3ds max that did this. but I have not been able to find one for Maya.

thanks guys! rusty, yes I do intend to texture it some time in the future but not the near near future as I have other projects I need to get back to =) calma, final count was 903036 faces and I made the whole thing polygon by polygon... no scripts or anythin fancy =)
