how about a wire frame so we can see the mesh. that would help in determining what is going on.

Do you have any tri's mixed in with quads? That might be contributing to that...

Maybe a little closer up on the corners of the mouth?? It's kinda hard to see what's going on in that pic.
Is that a wire frame render? Just do a screen shot.

also i think you need to show it unsmoothed so we can see whats its doing to it.
so closer still and un-smoothed will help i think:)

yeah zoom up nice and close so all we see is the problem area
we dont need to see the whole wire jsut in the corner of the mouth
and unsmoothed would be great thanks( need to see it unsmoothed to see the cage)

i have the images on this page that will help you
what do you need to see??
Check your meshsmooth options, in the parameters rollout make sure that you have smooth result checked. If you checked separate by smoothing groups make sure all your faces share the same smoothing group, otherwise max will create a crease at the boundaries of every SG.
Also make sure that you material doesn't have the faceted option checked.
Hope that helps

I do models for lowres gaming stuff, but when I do converts for high res pics, especially those concerning meshsmooth, I always make it a habbit to use max's smoothing groups, to "Layout how I want the meshsmooth modifier to work.... there is a check box in the modifier that will tell it to use the smoothing groups as a guide. This produces nice clean edges in areas where I want them.
This is what I think is happening to your mesh, you are using mesh smooth, but not telling Max where and how to do the smoothing... so it assumes you want it all to be smoothed out.
Please show the mesh before Smoothing, and the one after. That would tell more about what and how you are trying to do this.

Looks kinda like a lowres shadow map to me...
Do you have any lights in the scene?
