View Full Version : 16,000 x 16,000 pixels render problem
eokorie 03-16-2003, 03:34 PM How much memrory does Cinema 4D require in order to render an image in poster size... about 16,000 x 16,000 pixels.
Every time i try this, i get the "Out of Memory" problem.
My compyter runs on Windows XP with 128 MB Ram...
Any ideas?

16.000x16.000 = 256.000.000 Pixel. Each Pixel needs at least 3 Byte to store r,g,b = 768.000.000 bytes. often you need an additional byte for the alpha.
so you need 1GB just for the image data ... so if you now have some points and polygons the renderer would also very happy about some extra bytes :-)
and at last the renderer needs some buffers for caching.
so i think to render such an image you should buy a lot of ram (1.5 GB should be fine) and turn the virtual memory on ...
cheers

geez I didnt even know cinema would run on 128.

yes, 128 MINIMUM requirements....
Another doo-hickey would be to have some buff DDR ram as well...i am running 512 DDR pc-2100 i would to upgrade to 1.024 GB of DDR 400

well looks like it about time i started saving some serious money... the price of RAM has really shot up in the UK... I think a 512 MB is about £110.... so that a lot of money....
Oh well, I guess that is the price to pay!!

Ouch.
1) Im surprised you can run C4D under XP with that little RAM.
2) How big is the poster?
3) what DPI do you need?
When i last bought ram (along time ago) it was dirt cheap. totally sucks that the price has gone up. I thought it would stay low forever :(

Its some work that I am doing for a customer. He is trying to promote some products of his and is looking for poster/billboard size images.
As for the DPI, i am looking the best possible quality
And yes, Cinema 4D runs perfectly well on my system. Although not fast enough for my liking.... which is probably due to the RAM.
This may be a stupid question but are there any 1GB ram chips available. I am running a PC-2100 DDR.

yeah there are 1gb ram modules, but they cost shatloads, i recommend you get 2x 512 (like moi! )
ADD: if you want a good place for buying ram get www.komplett.co.uk only downside is that they only do next day delivery which is £7

that's probably a digital print, so all that is required is 75 dpi with 100% size instead of offset-print (240 - 300 dpi)
what you wanna do (at least thats how we handle files of that size at work) have an image rendered that is much smaller in size but has a higher dpi-count.
i just produced flags with the size of 2 m x 5 m and the prints (on fabric, not paper) came out quite well. if you have to scale your image a bit higher, use a noise-shader on it. remember, that these billboards are viewed from a distance

We will need some numbers to really help. you can't quote someone to make a billboard, and produce it if you have no idea how big it needs to be. You're working blind.
Find out a physical size and what DPI it needs to be, then get back to us. Roadside billboards are typically 18-36 DPI. So a really huge 30 foot wide billboard at a high quality needs to be 13,000 pixels wide.
But remember this is a vey large billboard at the highest quality.

If you don't have the time/resources to upgrade your machine you could consider rendering your images in sections and then comping them in Photoshop.

It would still be quite painful. After loading XP and R8, he must only have a few megs left to play with. There would have to be many many many small renders to get up to 16000x16000.
And then he needs to load all of these images to composite them, thus hitting his 128meg barrier again!
