basti 03-16-2003, 01:11 PM hi!
long time ago i posted the first finished vfx shots of my personal movieproject. i'm currently working on my movie under a very tight deadline because i just cannot work without high pressure ;)
so here are the next 5 finished shots, again very short ones but i'm glad the project is going on!
small preview for four of them:
http://www.pixellusion.de/images/4newshots.jpg

014_011 (http://www.pixellusion.de/movies/014_011_final.mov)
014_014 (http://www.pixellusion.de/movies/014_014_final.mov)
015_005 (http://www.pixellusion.de/movies/015_005_final.mov)
hope you like the shots. i'm working with maxon's cinema4d, matchmover and aftereffects
basti :)
ps: 013_010 is a very bloody one... we used about 0.5 liter filmblood for the shot

If i could do a third of what you did i would be the happyest guy on earth . Great cam effect , mouvement of beast is nice and fluid .
The shadow on beast and human are nice too they match ..... this i like . I don't know if it is hard to do but i know that in some films they just don't do the job like you just did !
Love it show us more !:)

Hey man, pretty awsome stuff you have there, really cool.
Is this a project for school, or is it your job?
I have one lttle remark, have a look at the second movie, the animal is flaotingthere at the end, his feet do not touch the ground.
Really nicely done.

hey,
great job on all of those. My favourite is the first one and the bloody one  U've nailed the light and shadows and the animation aswell. One thing is bothering me in the shot 013_010 and thats near the end when the creature suddenly raises his head. A bit stiff there otherwise excellent.
The first animation labeled 013_002 is very nicely executed. I asume thats a CG door so im wondering if u animated it manually or by use of dynamics. Keep up the good job and keep posting.
Cheers!

wow.. thanks for putting this on the frontpage.. i hope our server will stand the traffic ;)
thanks for all your comments again! :D
OggieBoogie: no, it's a real door we pushed out of the wall (great fun btw) but it was pretty hard to create some good interaction with the cg alien
[DSmod]Tweak: you need quicktime 5 to view the movies. (codec is sorensen3)
JBoskma: that's why i'm putting so much energy into the movie. the good shots will be used for my demo reel and i hope to get a job anywhere around the world after i finsihed my 'zivildienst' here in germany. i'm 19 now and i hope to work for about one year before i'm starting to study.
wozzyke: it's a personal project (length 1 hour and about 30 vfx-shots all done by one person) and thanks for your remark :) trying to fix that! i guess it's because of the bright shadows. some contact shadows will solve the problem hopefully

The C4D force is strong with you, yeeessssss.
My only crit is that the monster doesn't seem very synchronized with your fall in the 10th one. otherwise, fantastic job!

I gotta get me a copy of after effects, only thing I can see that looks a little weird is the camera/head jerk that the alien makes in the bloody one
have you a render of just the alien that we could see? :)

amazing stuff dude! I love it! That shot of the alien comming out of the door is Hollywood quality.

Amazing work. Actually, what camera are you using? Canon XL?
The bug through the door, top quality. Are you rendering the bug
out with a blue/green bg, then keying it out in AFX? Because, the
composite is flawless...

holly cow batman! nice VFX you got there man the shadows mesh very well, did you just eye ball it or use some HDRI or matte balls?

Wow. nice work.
Now those live footage have still camera right!?
coz the movement looks like its animated later.
If the camera movements are real, then how do you go about tracking the ceature?

that looks so real it scares me.

cool.. i did not expect this amount of good feedback, thanks!!
aazimkhan: yes, you are right. shots 015_005 014_014 are real world camera pans+movements but all other shots are just animated camera moves . the intense matchmove work was done with the previous 5 or more shots.
PolyMangler: just eyeballing :) actually the lighning was created pretty fast.. i placed some lights did a few testrenders and that's it.. not more than 3 minutes for every shot.
Lamberth: canon xm1 was used for filming.. i guess it's called gl-1 in the us.. or gm-1 don't know excactly. it was rendered as a tif sequence with alpha channel.
lildragon: "C4D uh huh" what does that mean!? ;) hehe - here you are:

So I guess you used a pretty large squib for the blood effect. Did you just tape that to the back of your head or what? I bet it hurt when you had to bang it open :)
Is this part of a short film thats in the works? I'd love to see it when its finished!
My ONLY crit is that the monster doesnt have an aggressive feel to it. Ok it has the body but the mouth just doesnt do it for me... doesnt look like something that could easily take a bite out of nothing... but thats just personal taste, of course. On the whole, amazing job! 5 stars!

I like 013_002. What type of material was in that door for the 'glass'? I know above you said it was real (the door) but the glass looks odd in the last few frames. I'm guessing it's that glass with the wire mesh in it, but then how would you punch a clean hole through it? Just asking because it looks pretty opaque and has a different type of shatter to it. If its 'real', what did you use to break it after the door got blown off?
Great work,
Cheers

I liked the blood spurt to the back of the head. I was hoping that was particles trakced in but I guess not. Over all the track on the creature was fairly well done.
Anyway the one crit is you have that terrific blood splatter but then you have no blood on the front of his shirt or at his neck where the creature punctures him. This can really be easily fixed especially if its mini dv footage. Just paint up in photoshop a quick bloody pulp for the font of his neck and then just do a rotational and positional comp track on it.
Over all interesting work. It's nice to see C4D user put out this kind of level of work.

the camera movement in the first shot is all up/down (all Y axis, no X), it could use some horizontal to it, and the other shots with AeFX movement need some more keyframe loving.. Beziers instead of linear keys, etc.
now that that's out of the way, HOLY CRAP how did you get the matte for that door in the first shot, if it was a practical?!?!?! I too thought it would be CGI because pulling the matte would be quite the issue (although its straight edges wouyld permit hand-keying a mask in AEFX).
FANTASTIC work, very inspiring.:applause:

:airguitar Execellent work dude, You have really put a lot of time and effort into this project. My only critique is in 013_010 you camera movement up is timed perfectly with the creatures head movement, this gives the idea that the cameraman knows what the creature is going to do and sets the audience off from the movie. If you could hold back for about 6-12 frames it would look dynamite. :xtreme:

very nice, nice character design,
the only thing is the animation, I don`t think it`s dynamic enough
espacially with the creature having such long legs.
if the animation was more dynamic it would had more tension , I think, because the audience will fell that there isn`t any getting away from it
startship trooper will be a good one for reference
look forward seeing the finish short

durghs%/ half an hour for my answer and now it's gone because of a 'too many images' problem - smilies i guess' .. so here we go again (but shorter, sorry) :
AMAZING!! almost 5000 views.. i really appreciate your comments and views - though i'm sure our server does not ;)
@Pixel_Pisher_ thanks for that.. i'm sure i will be able to do changes in compositing. but due to my tight deadline (end of march for another 10 shots) it will be impossible to alter animations or the look of the creature, sorry (progerik - thanks for your comments, too - i will remember this for the next shots/projects)
@CourtJester the door was a matted pretty fast - just a 4 point mask handkeyed through the short sequence. but you are right it was hard to create a matte for the breaking glass. i used this technique: i modifiey a copy of the plate to black and white, changed the levels/brightness and ended up with a almost clean matte for the breaking glass. this matte was used to compose another copy of the plate over the whole thing. not the best way but much shorten than rotoscoping.. very short time remaining, as i said :)
@Lorecanth: i have no idea how to make it look convincing with painting blood frame by frame. i do not own the aftereffects pro version so there's no tracking available... and painting a filmstrip in photoshop.. mhh i don't know. but thanks for your idea! maybe there will be a small amount of time left for these details
@Abominable it was real glass.. please read the answer for courtjester... it's because of this strange technique i used. btw: it was pure luck the glass breaked. two friends pushed out the door and i don't know how the made it.. i guess it was raw strength ;)
thanks again,
basti
