Title: Dark and Stormy Night
Name: Matt Burdette
Country: United States
Software: After Effects, Maya, mental ray

This is an environment set for a class group project that will probably never see the light of day. The whole thing is done in Maya, rendered with mental ray, with the exception of a little bit of color correction, which is done in After Effects. I wanted to do the whole thing with just point and directional lights, so no final gather or GI of any kind, given the dark atmosphere. The fog is done with Fluid FX and the rain is just done with a simple streak particle emitter.

Thanks for the feedback, I totally agree with you guys. A lot of it has to do with time constraints, so I opted for setting mood with lighting and atmosphere over detail models and whatnot, although I realize time is no excuse ;)

Here's the breakdown video of the scene. I'd like to think it looks better in motion, although the issues you guys noted are still there, I feel like you don't notice them as much while moving?

Not at all trying to defend my work or anything, just presenting it as a whole.

I agree with you it is much better once the camera is moving. I think there is something a bit off though but it is hard to say what. I think maybe it is the splashing of the raindrops seems to be too large when the impact and makes the scale seem a bit off but overall I think it is a great work...something to be proud of.

i like the animated environment:) one thing i noticed: the drops don't fall in the foreground, guess you 'protected the camera' and focused on a more clear scene...

keep it up
