While not a character per se, I believe the Falcon is enough of a character in itself in the films to be worthy of the challenge.

i've made a start on the rear end of the falcon

i have a few ideas for the situation i want to put it in but i'll make a decision on that further down the line.

more tomorrow hopefully

ok....a small update....blocked out the basic shape of the engine deck and added the four "fins"...i also thinned out the sections i'd done previously as they looked too chunky.

added some small bits to the back and the beginnings of the engine deck detail (exhaust vents need some rotating to align them better)

ok you are gonna have to show me how you do the non-organic modeling...

what I mean is... when ever I did any non-organic modeling... the circles didn't look like circles...

did you make the grates as part of the regular mesh, or seperate?

could you show some wireframes... the problem that I usually have is that all my models are so low poly...

robo3687
05-25-2007, 08:42 AM
hey matt

for the all the circley pieces i started from a plain old cylinder primitive which i then cut up and extruded, bevelled etc etc as required....

the grates were made by multiplying a simple box over and over and shifting the verts too and fro to fit inside the circles

and i'll probably have a few wires up in the next few days.....

hope that helps a little....it probably doesn't....i suck at explaining things....i just do them without thinking about it.....lol

This is a very strange way of working - i.e. one completed small section with all the pipes, bells and whistles etc on it.
It'd make more sense to construct the basic hull as a whole and then start adding smaller detail. Work from big to small.

If I'm making a character, I don't start off by making one complete toe, with nail and wrinkles, then make a finger, then make the belly button, then the nose etc ,and then stick them altogether like a jigsaw.
I realise technical modeling like this is not the same as organic, but surely the big to small approach is still valid.

robo3687
05-25-2007, 02:04 PM
lol funny you mention that oddity....cos i was starting on that this afternoon....lol....

got most of it blocked out....

once i get that done i'll do the extra armour panels then move onto everything else

Nymbrixion
05-26-2007, 03:06 AM
Well I guess I can't say the same for you on the detail area. It looks like you have a really good start.

Are you just going to model the just Falcon, or are you going to put it into a scene.

I think it would be really cool if you also modelled the Mos Eisley Hangar Bay for displaying the model. just a suggestion.

Looking forward to seeing more of you progress, awesome start man!!

robo3687
05-26-2007, 03:15 AM
thanks Tim.

doicking bay 94 would be a good idea, i'll add it to my list of possibilities. Other ideas I had were blasting out of the death star II as it blows up or coming out of the asteroid with the space slug nipping at its butt....

The "Fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy" is starting to look bloody great mate!
Love the amount of detail you have put in and interesting to note that you model that same way as I do. doing it piece by piece. it's how i've done everything so far. anyway keep up the great work!

okay and here we are

I've blocked out most of the main shapes (still missing the cockpit, parts of the front mandibles and parts on the underside) and added the upper armour plating to the hull...still need to cut the holes in the underlaying mesh though...

thanks a bunch for that monotoon, they help more than you know...

for my next update (which will come on or after the weekend most likely) I'm going to be modelling the docking ring area (top right in monotoons pic) in fully detail and take it as far as I plan to take the rest of the model, just so everyone can get an idea of what I'm aiming for.....look out for it either saturday or monday

i'm having sunday off as it is my birthday...lol...finally no longer a teenager....lol

06-05-2007, 08:19 AM
happy late birthday dude...

well I thought of another question to ask you about your workflow... do you end up leaving the grates and parts seperate and just use grouping? or do you make it all one mesh... (as you can guess I like your workflow and I am trying to learn what I can) plus I have a few personal projects that are non-organic

robo3687
06-05-2007, 09:02 AM
thanks everyone for the birthday wishes....

Whyst - with the dish, I may not be adding it, since I'm doing the escape from the second death star, the dish had already been knocked off at that point....so there'll be a mangled stump instead....lol....

morphius - i usually keep everything separate until I have the detail at a level I want and then i begin attaching various parts together into single meshes, it seems to lower the burden on my cpu more than grouping i think because instead of computing all the meshes and then the grouping of those meshes it just has the single mesh to deal with.....

update's been delayed a little bit....other work is taking priority at the moment

robo3687
06-06-2007, 06:04 AM
thanks guys...i know what you mean about the many many parts.....it makes my head hurt to think about them all...lol....

the interesting thing about the docking rings is that they are different on both sides of the ship, in that they both have varying amounts of damage and missing parts...so as I'm constructing this I'm trying to make a full and "brand-new" docking ring which I'll then take parts away from and bash up a bit.....

more updates coming later on today

WyattHarris
06-06-2007, 07:40 AM
Yeah thats the challenge with this ship, its owners asked alot and skimped on the repair bills. :D

Man, the detail on that hatch looks fantastic, I never even noticed that before. Need to go back and scrutinize a little closer.

robo3687
06-06-2007, 09:11 AM
well i've finished off the internal details of the docking ring now.....and modified them as per my references....i'm quite happy with how they look

all thats left now on them is a few more greebly bits on the outside and some more damage...

beautiful work robo, the detail is very complex. I think you have done greebling a bit before. The MF -Detail image link seems to be gone now, would have been nice to compare and follow along, but at least you have them, so we can still follow along with a slow reveal.

Mos Eisley has always been one of my fav locales also, lots of buildings though, I suppose you could do a closeup.

Could you ever texture this at this detail or would you do a less detailed texture eg: down to the hatch level but not each fitting, are you going to texture at all?

robo3687
06-06-2007, 11:08 AM
i don't plan to texture it for the challenge, want to devote as much time as possible to the modelling...cos I'll need it.....

however I may go thorugh and texture it after the challenge (then again i may not...lol...depends on other work and stuff)....if i did i don't think I would do it on a part by part basis....I may work up some procedural textures for the smaller parts and do maps for the larger areas..

Your work is sick, mate.....in a good sense of course :)

robo3687
06-17-2007, 04:52 AM
thanks yav, your greivous is coming along nicely (i modelled one ages ago, like a week or so after the initial designs for grevious were released....which was months and months before the movie came out.....boy was that a challenge.....lol.....)

I've been thinking about the sheer scale of this model and have devised a concept that will allow an unfinished model (should it come to that) to be entered in as finished.....I'll post more about that later on...

the next update will come in the next day or so and is going to be the quad turbo laser that sits over the porthole....and probably also the greeble-isation of that whole area in general....

more updates coming later on today.....hopefully I'll get the majority of the quads finished off...

also i'm basing my model off of the miniature of the falcon (don't know if its the 3 or 5 foot version), I just thought I'd mention that because I think the 'full size' cannons seen in the film are a bit different....but these are the same as whats on the miniature....

Your work is beatuiful. I feel like I'm watching all my friends playing while I'm stuck looking out my window & grounded.

I so wish I had time to devote to this wonderful challange. (wipe tear)

I got a bit more work in on the quads this afternoon

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1525/020ud1.jpg

but somehow I don't think I'm going to get this thing finished within the bounds of the challenge (barring an absolute miracle and a mammoth effort) so I'm going to have to implement plan B, which basically involves focusing on just getting the top half of the model fully decked out.....and then creating the environment....I'll see how i go
