View Full Version : WIP: Low poly Viking Zombie--- of DOOM!
blankslatejoe 03-16-2003, 06:08 AM Hi Guys,
I'm working on a low polygon Viking Zombie for a VideoGame Development course I'm taking. My budget is only 500 polys because my teacher decided I needed a good lesson in poly budgeting. SO, here goes!
my intial sketch

my first stat sheet sketch
http://ramsites.net/~mirabellojr/wips/zombie2.jpg
my revised statsheet sketch (not quite isometric views before).
http://ramsites.net/~mirabellojr/wips/zombie3.jpg
And, after about 2 hours, here I am at roughly 300 polys. So far I'm in good shape, but I may have to rework some stuff since I want the hands and face to look fairly nice..

any comments and crits are welcome!!

Its looking good, if your already sitting at 300 polys bringing the face in is going to be quite a chore, from the concept art all the detail you want is probablly going to need to go the texture.
Look forward to see when your finished, keep it coming:thumbsup:

yeah im worried, but heck, this is all a learning experience. I don't think I'll get it completely under budget on my first try. I'll probably have to work down a little.
Thanks though!

Hard to keep him under 500 though...
However, it looks good so far

 Looks good so far...love the idea and the sketches, but I'd have to agree about that 500 poly budget being far out of reach if you've already hit 300...just off the top of my head, you could simplify the foot's side (on the bottom) down to just two polygons instead of four...you're not going to get any less detail...since most of that will be in texture...did you design the character before or after the 500 poly budget? or were you settin yourself up for a good challenge for your first low poly character?

well, here's my update. This is at 512 polygons. My teacher extended my budget a little, so I should be able to get some more armor in too. Then, it's to texturing!

oh, and to answer your question, heather, I drew him out before Brien put down the 500 budget... As is though, I came pretty close to it. Thanks for the advice on the legs though, thats where I shaved off the most polys.

Not bad at all, considering the tight budget :D
I'm no expert on low poly modelling, in fact I have never done low poly work at all, but I really wanted to say that I like your concept a lot! And that I hope that with some cunning texturing, you can get this looking great!

looking good so far...i hope the textures get the concept through...he reminds me of the skeletons from the Black Cauldron

Wow! Thanks leigh, I'm a big fan of your work. Any texture hints from the texture goddess would be much appreciated!! I should have an update pretty soon
Here's that closeup!
I wanted to emphasis the jaw, but not so much the eyes rim of the helmet... we'll see how this turns out!

looks good so far, try to sacrifce some polys for a brow ridge,
the eyes will look way better with a brow ridge.
are you allowed alpha maps, because that cloth in the front can easily be done that way.
you might be able to snap a few polys in the foot lower leg area.
good luck, looking good so far.:buttrock:

Awwww you flatter me
Well, this should be a simple case of some cunning UV mapping, and then loads of fun painting!! :D:D
Since you obviously have a great talent with drawing, I am sure that painting the textures won't be a problem for you, but if you need any help with the mapping, I'll be here! ;)

wow thanks guys! I added the armor pieces, split the bones on the right arm, and added the bag, and am at 580 polys right now...
I'll go ahead and add that browline.. I think as long as I'm under 600 the teacher will be ok with it.

Still working on this thing... here's the beginings of the texture. I think im gonna try and stay as close as possible to the 500 poly limit.. crits/comments?

I just had to comment on the excellent thread title. It would deserve 5 stars just for that! :D
The model looks good. I second KWAK though, lets see those textures applied!

I'm working on a test UV mapped version right now, having some problems with seaming, but ah well, im learning..! Thanks guys

I like the design and the model. It seems the texture is coming along just fine as well. Perhaps the head should take up a larger part of the texture. Heads are almost always more detailed (texture wise) compared to the rest of the body. That's because people tend to focus on the head when looking at a character.

Ok guys, thanks for all the support, :) Here's some quick mapped renders. Only the middle sections are completed, and even they are still a little rough. Ignore that funky stuff on his shoulder pad, thats not painted yet.:)
to answer questions: I did this with photoshop 6, handpainting almost everything with the wacom tablet. It's taken longer than I'd like to admit, over manymany days, but the teacher has assigned a pretty liberal deadline, so I'm not too worried about rushing.
Let me know what you think, thanks again guys!

Sorry about the long long delay again guys, I've been out of town and haven't been able to post this the past two weeks. Here's the finished Zombie.
I alrealdy realize the problems I'd run into with animating this sucker, but otherwise I'm happy with this, since it's my first try.
Here's what I know I need to improve:
I need to figure out how to manage my polys better for rigging
I need to manage my texture sizes/depths better
I need to learn how to rig and pose him a little better.
Any other crits/comments are welcome, thanks for all your support guys!

That came out well
Although the boot texture looks a little strange...

05-14-2003, 12:15 AM
thanks leigh! Yeah, the boots and legs were a little bit rushed, but the teacher seemed overall pretty happy with how it turned out. Thanks for the compliment though, how's that book coming along?
leigh
05-14-2003, 12:21 AM
My book is coming along really well thank you :)
Aaah, so you rushed the legs and boots - it's a pity. Although, even though the project is now over, there is no reason why you can't still improve it when you have some spare time ;)
Are you going to animate him?
blankslatejoe
05-14-2003, 12:29 AM
Although I'd like to animate him, I've got plenty of other things on my table first. I think you're a lightwaver, right Leigh? So you should be happy to know that I'm trying to teach myself the basics of LW.
However, I did pick up a copy of Paul Steed's Real Time Character Animation book a month ago, so expect some animation from me eventually . :) Thanks again and goodluck!

hey...wondered what was goin on with him...looks pretty nice...but you can definitely tell you spent some more tender moments with the earlier textures you did like the sachel and face than the boots...but completely understandable with how hectic your schedule is...dont know how you do it
cant wait to see your next piece :bounce:
