View Full Version : Just ordered Painter X
nblarson 05-24-2007, 01:11 AM I've been using Artweaver and OpenCanvas for awhile now, and I figured that with such a great discount Corel offers for students and how highly acclaimed their software is, I'd order Painter X. While I have a few qualms with each program, they've definitely suited me in basic painting and drawing (I'm a hobbyist, by no means a professional :P). That being said, how much of a difference in versatility and capability will I notice in this jump from basic freeware/cheap software to a more professional level application, and will there be a severe learning curve in getting the most out of it?

Depends on what features you plan to use. Painter's brush engine is far superior if your trying to mimic natural media, but otherwise similar effects can be achieved in opencanvas/photoshop/gimp etc, though painter gives more control even with non-natural brushes of course. Painter also has some tools that are quite useful aside from just the brush/paper engine - for example the perspective grid and the ideal proportions tool in X come in handy on a regular basis, but of course is nothing you couldn't do in another program by hand, it just makes it easier and more automatic. If you are more of a painter (No pun intended) then I think you will find Painter to be a nice upgrade but if you mostly only do coloring/sketching/airbrush type work then probably not so much.

Best is to try the Painter X demo and draw your own conclusions.
